CEDAR RAPIDS – Of all the things City High has done well during an impressive start to the season perhaps the thing the Little Hawks have done best is bounce back.
Though the situation hasn’t arisen often City High has been excellent coming off of losses.
For just the fourth time this season City High will face that challenge next week.
Class 5A fourth-ranked City High had a five-game winning streak snapped on Thursday with a 50-40 loss at Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest in Cedar Rapids.
“We are in a unique position, this is our fourth loss, our fourth loss a few years ago was on like December 9th,” City High coach Lynsey Barnard said. “We are going to look in the mirror, figure out what we need to do and it’s going to take all of us but we aren’t going to feel sorry for ourselves.”
Cedar Rapids Prairie got a game-high 23 points from junior guard KeaOnna Worley and Brynie Hadenfeldt as the Hawks avenged a 65-39 loss to City High on January 9.
City High dropped to 14-4 with the loss, its first since a road setback at Cedar Falls on January 9.
“It’s really hard to beat a team twice especially when you have a team like that with the talent they have, a state championship coach that is playing loose with nothing to lose,” Barnard said. “KeaOnna (Worley) made some shots Brynlie (Hadenfeldt) made some shots that we contested as well as we could they are just that good.”
City High never led on Thursday while dropping to 14-4 on the season.
Cedar Rapids Prairie used a 7-0 first-quarter run capped by a Worley 3-pointer to take a 14-6 lead and never let the Little Hawks get closer than four the rest of the game.
City High shot just 30 percent from the floor and was 5-of-18 from 3-point range.
“I thought a lot of the credit goes to Prairie,” Barnard said. “I thought they adjusted really well defensively and nothing was easy. Whether they rotated awesome or we just didn’t capitalize on stuff their defense made it difficult on us.”
City High had an opportunity late.
The Little Hawks cut a 12-point halftime lead to four with 3:50 to play on a Ka’Liyah Blakeney 3-pointer with 3:50 remaining.
Blakeney came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers, all in the second half, and finished with nine points.
“She works so hard in the summer, if her feet are set she is a knock down shooter,” Barnard said. “I am so happy that her hard work paid off in this moment and for her teammates to be excited for her, we need that.”
Prairie responded by scoring the next eight points over a span of nearly three minutes to put the game away.
Hattie Galloway led City High with 10 points and seven rebounds, Maybes Miller had seven points and Tessa Driscoll had five points to surpass the 1,000-point mark in her career.
“I don’t think that we played as well as we could have but Prairie won that game,” Barnard said. “We have to find a way to get the best out of everybody on the same night and if we can do that I think we will be in a really good spot.
City High is a perfect 3-0 coming off losses this season and will have its opportunity for a bounce back when it travels to Dubuque Hempstead (3-13) on Monday.
“We are disappointed, not discouraged,” Barnard said. “Welcome to 5A basketball in the MVC where you have to bring it every night.”
