West High Sends Four to Quarterfinals on Opening Day of Class 3A State Wrestling Meet

It was a solid start for West High at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament on Wednesday.
West High sent four wrestlers to the 3A quarterfinals and kept two other wrestlers alive in the consolation bracket while closing the opening day of the state meet in 12th place in the 3A team standings at Casey’s Center in Des Moines.
Freshman Diego Robertty and Hugo Hughes and seniors Alexander Pierce and Kaden Stitt all advanced to the quarterfinals for West High with second-round wins on Wednesday.
Southeast Polk leads the Class 3A team standings with 68 points followed by North Scott with 58 and Indianola with 55.5.
West High is 12th with 33 points.
Hughes was a highlight on a solid opening day for the Trojans posting a pair of wins to advance to the 120-pound quarterfinals.
No. 11 ranked Hughes opened with a second-period pin of Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Miguel Astorga.
Hughes advanced to the quarterfinals with a pin of sixth-ranked Oliver Lange of West Des Moines Valley in 2:21 in the second round.
Hughes will face top-ranked Benjamin Walsh (27-1) of Ankeny in the quarterfinals.
The Class 3A quarterfinals are part of the second 3A session that gets underway at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Pierce took the first step toward a fourth consecutive state finals appearance with a 16-4 first-period tech fall of Asaiah Martinez-Ruiz of Norwalk in the second round at 126 pounds.
Second-ranked Pierce (46-0) needed just 1:53 to record the tech fall over Martinez-Ruiz and will face Aiden Kirk (40-12) of Cedar Rapids Prairie in the 126-pound quarterfinals on Thursday.
Top-ranked Robertty (36-1) won his state tournament debut, pinning Nicholas Million of Marshalltown in 43 seconds in a 113-pound second-round contest.
Robertty will face fourth-ranked Cain Crosson (35-2) of Indianola in the quarterfinals.
Stitt was the fourth West High wrestler to secure a spot in the quarterfinals earning a 6-0 decision over Mason Hinrichs of Waverly-Shell Rock in a second-round match at 285 pounds.
Fourth-ranked Stitt (38-6) will face sixth-ranked Cary Cox (26-6) of Pleasant Valley in the quarterfinals.
Freshman 157-pounder Blest Woods and senior 165-pounder Campbell Janis each won second-round consolation matches after losses in the second round to remain alive.
Liberty High sent two wrestlers to the quarterfinals while City High and Clear Creek Amana each will have one quarterfinalist.
Liberty High 106-pound Connor McGonegle pinned sixth-ranked Braydon Trammer of Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in 5:50 in a second-round match to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
McGonegle will face top-ranked Amir Newman-Winfrey (42-1) in the 106-pound quarterfinals.
Eighth-ranked Liberty High senior Landon Bell (9-0) defeated Wes Weiford of Johnston 6-3 in a tiebreaker to return to the 175-pound quarterfinals.
Liberty High 120-pounder Benjamin Rosen won a second-round consolation match to advance to Thursday.
City High junior Zyaire Washpun (33-11) won a 5-0 decision over Amos Guanue of West Des Moines Dowling in a 132-pound second round match to advance to the quarterfinals.
Eighth-ranked Washpun will face top-ranked Jake Knight (37-0) of Bettendorf in the quarterfinals.
City High has three wrestlers in the consolation bracket joining Washpun on the second day of action on Thursday.
Jack Litton (106), Chase Williams (113) and Malachi Clement (138) all won second-round consolation matches to advance to Thursday.
Ninth-ranked Clear Creek Amana sophomore Nolan Dao (33-6) reached the quarterfinals at 165 pounds with a 4-0 second-round win over Matthew Phillips of Oskaloosa.
Dao will face second-ranked Calvin Rathjen (25-2) of Ankeny in the quarterfinals.
Clear Creek Amana had to wrestlers advance in the consolation bracket on Thursday in sophomore 113-pounder Wyatt Iburg and freshman 120-pound Tytus Steapp.
