DES MOINES – Competing at the state wrestling meet can come with the ups and downs of a rollercoaster track.
Regina junior Dawson Boileau rode the state tournament roller coaster on the opening day of the Class 1A meet on Thursday at Casey’s Center in Des Moines.
Boileau went 2-1 in his state meet debut, bouncing back from a second-round loss with a consolation win that extended his season to the second day of the state meet.
“You know there’s going to be ups and downs,” Boileau said. “I just had to clear my mind.”
The highs came early for Boileau (47-13) on Thursday in the form of a dramatic third-period pin of Luke Malm of GTRA in an opening-round match at 190 pounds.
Boileau trailed Malm 5-3 in the third period but took the lead with a takedown with 1:30 remaining in the final period.
He out Malm on his back less than a minute later closing out the opening-round pin in 5:31.
The low for the day came in the second round when Boileau was pinned in 2:56 by top-seeded Ryan Wirtz (28-2) of Emmetsburg.
Boileau ended the day on a high, bouncing back from the second-round loss with a second-period pin of Braydon Kusler (30-14) of Akron-Westfield in a consolation match.
“I knew I was still in the game,” Boileau said. “I knew I could still place, I could still get on the podium which was the goal for me.”
Boileau will face Luke Lansing (36-13) of Springville in a consolation match on Friday in a session that begins at 9 a.m.
“It’s a lot different from a regular tournament, wrestling tomorrow will be the first time I’ve ever had a two-day tournament,” Boileau said. “I just have to keep going through and keep upsetting people and hopefully I can get to the blood round and place.”
Regina juniors Porter and Simon Shetler each had their seasons end with consolation losses on Thursday.
Porter Shetler opened the tournament with an 18-3 tech fall of Cordell Clemens of Mount Ayr in an opening-round match at 215 pounds before back-to-back losses to top-10 ranked opponents.
Fifth-ranked Kamdyn Kraklio of Durant defeated Porter Shetler in the second round and Shetler (38-18) closed with a loss to ninth-ranked Brooks Beitelspacher of Hinton.
Simon Shetler (40-15) dropped his opener at 285 pounds to Hayden Cantrell of Louisa-Muscatine and fell to Brody Harris of South Hamilton in the consolation round.
“I’m so grateful for having these coaches, coach (Nelson) Brands and all these guys and my practice partners, it’s great to have them here with me,” Boileau said. “We push each other in the weight room and the wrestling room and that really helps.”
