Second-ranked Regina Keeps Mid-Prairie Offense in Check in 63-43 Win

IOWA CITY – Regina knows the offensive capability of Mid-Prairie and senior guard Bryce Henry.
The Regals saw it first-hand last February as Henry poured in 22 points in a 67-58 Golden Hawk win over Regina in Iowa City.
On Tuesday Regina never let Henry or the Golden Hawks get going.
Class 2A second-ranked Regina limited Mid-Prairie to 38 percent shooting in a 63-43 rout of the Golden Hawks in a River Valley Conference South Division showdown at Regina.
“We respect those guys and we knew we had to bring our best to make sure they didn’t score a lot of points,” Regina senior guard Drew Greve said. “We know they can be dangerous on offense so we were ready.”
Last season Mid-Prairie made eight 3-pointers, four by Henry, in the win at Regina.
The 67 points for Mid-Prairie in that win were the most Regina allowed in a game last season.
Regina was up to the task defensively on Tuesday.
The Regals held Henry to 12 points, more than five below his season average of 17.9 per game, on 5-of-16 shooting and Mid-Prairie finished 5-of-18 from 3-point range.
“We had to get out and guard the arch, they are shooting 20 threes a game so we had to get out there and recognize their shooting ability,” Regina coach Paul Rundquist said. “We worked the last couple of days on that and I thought the kids did a nice job.”
Meanwhile Regina got offensive contributions from everyone.
Five Regals had at least seven points, led by junior Tate Wallace with 16 as Regina improved to 9-1 on the season and stayed perfect at 6-0 in RVC South Division play.
“They shoot a lot of threes so they can be dangerous in a lot of areas, when the threes go in they are a top five team in the state,” Wallace said. “Our defense leads into our offense so if we play good defense our offense is going to look pretty good and we did that pretty well tonight.”
Mid-Prairie (7-3, 5-2 RVC) entered averaging 60.3 points per game but found things tough from the outset against Regina.
Regina scored the first five points of the game and never trailed, building leads of 15-9 after the first quarter and 32-17 at the half.
The Regals closed the first half on a 15-4 run that featured a 3-pointer from Greve and two triples from senior guard Jack O’Leary.
“We are different than we were last year, we have some guys that can knock down shots and you have to come out and honor that and it opens up the inside that much more,” Rundquist said. “We have guys shooting with confidence but we don’t want to be a team that comes down and fires it up on the first pass.”
Regina never let Mid-Prairie back into the game in the second half.
The Regals led by as many as 28 in the fourth quarter.
O’Leary had 13 points and Greve finished with 10 points as Regina shot 57 percent from the floor including 6-of-14 from 3-point range.
Will Litton had nine points and 10 rebounds and Ben Wade had seven points and six rebounds.
“I think it’s really hard to guard, it’s hard to scout, when you have a lot of guys who can either extend the court or get big inside,” Greve said. “We have some new guys this year that have stepped up and are taking a bigger role as the season goes on and hopefully it looks like that every night where we have pretty even scoring.”
