Steve Bergman spent nearly four decades turning West High into one of the premier boys basketball programs in the state while becoming one of the most successful coaches in state history.
On Friday Bergman announced his 35th season at West High was his last.
West High announced that Bergman had resigned as head boys basketball coach after 35 season with a press release.
“After 35 years I have made the difficult decision to step down from my position as the head basketball coach at Iowa City West,” Bergman wrote in the statement. “This decision comes after much reflection. While I appreciate being given the option to continue as coach, I believe now is the right time to move on.”
Bergman has racked up 666 wins over 39 seasons as a head coach, the last 35 seasons and 623 wins coming at West High.
In his 35 seasons at West High Bergman led the Trojans to the state tournament 19 times and won six state titles.
Under Bergman the Trojans won Class 4A state titles in 1998, 2000, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2017.
“We appreciate everything that Coach Bergman has done for the Iowa City West basketball program and West High School,” West High Athletic Director BJ Mayer said. “He has built the program into one that is constantly in contention for state tournament appearance and conference titles. Coach Bergman is one of the finest basketball minds around and was always willing to talk basketball and help me out when I first arrived as the Iowa City West girls basketball coach. I cannot thank him enough for helping me and for all of the contributions that he has made to the basketball program and West High.”
A search for a replacement will be immediately.
West High went 15-8 and lost in the Class 4A substate semifinals last season.
