IOWA CITY – In a prep career marked by individual achievements and filled with records and titles there was still something missing for City High senior Forrest Frazier.
With some help from his teammates Frazier filled in that final spot on a stellar high school swimming resume on Saturday at the state swimming meet at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.
Frazier doubled his career title haul on Saturday winning three more titles, setting state meet records in all three including the first state relay win in the 200 medley relay.
“It’s truly an honor everything that has happened throughout my high school career but the biggest thing for me today was getting that team title in the 200 medley relay,” Frazier said. “That was amazing. Getting the state record on top of that was great way to end my career.”
Frazier set state meet records in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke on his way to being named the meet’s outstanding swimmer for the second time in the past three seasons.
However, it was the win in the 200 medley relay that had Frazier smiling.
Prior to Saturday the best relay finish for Frazier came his sophomore season when the Little Hawks were runner-up to Ames in the 200 medley.
“That has been my main goal throughout high school just a team win,” Frazier said. “We were really close to it my sophomore year and it was a big bummer when we lost that but we’ve kept that in the back of our heads and came back really strong this year and got it done.”
City High spent most of the season trailing only West High for the top time in the 200 medley. The Little Hawks had lost to the Trojans in the event at the Little Hawk Invite, a Mississippi Valley Conference dual and most recent in the district meet last Saturday.
In the final meet of the season the City High foursome of Frazier, Caleb Coons, Isaac Weigel and Bryce Edens flipped the script on their cross-town rivals.
It was the second relay win in City High history and first since the Little Hawks won the 400 freestyle in 1994.
“I’ve never had a boys relay win so that’s really cool for me,” City High coach Zane Hugo said. “It just kind of all came together, we got beat by West High every single time we raced them and we only had to beat them once and that was really fun today.
Coons got City High off to a strong start and Frazier gave the Little Hawks a lead they would never relinquish on the second leg.
City High won in a time of 1:31.58 to break the state meet record of 1:32.67 set last season by West Des Moines Dowling.
“That was big, for most of us that was the biggest race of the day,” Weigel said. “Getting the state record was amazing it was the cherry on the top of the cake.”
West High was more than a second faster than City High at the district meet last week and finished runner-up on Saturday in 1:31.58.
“We’ve been second the whole season,” Frazier said. “West had gotten us every other time we had raced but coming into this meet with the changes we made from last week and where we were sitting we were pretty confident.”
The relay win was a strong start for a stellar day for City High.
Frazier put the finishing touches on a brilliant career with state meet records in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
He won the 200 IM in 1:45.96 to break the previous meet record set by West High’s Mark McGlaughlin in 2016.
In the final individual race of his career Frazier broke his own state meet record in the 100 breaststroke by a full second with a time of 53.15 to win the event for the third consecutive season.
Frazier joined Cameron Herting as the only swimmers in City High history to win state titles in the same event in three consecutive seasons.
“High school swimming is about the team,” Frazier said. “Yes, I want to do well for myself but when you are competing for your high school you are competing for your whole school and your team and just leaving with a team win in a relay and a state record that’s beyond all my goals.”
Weigel had his own strong day placing third in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle.
“He came up clutch in a couple of races,” Hugo said of Weigel. “Everybody played their part and his was a big one.”
Frazier and Weigel joined Coons and Edens on the Little Hawk 400 freestyle relay team that placed fifth as City High finished fifth in the team standings with 160 points.
It was the first top-five team finish for City High since placing third in 1994.
“They did really good, this meet is what we plan for all season,” Hugo said. “We’ve had some ups and downs throughout the year and it’s always good to end on a high note like this.”
