Murken Column: (Re)Introducing the Director of Content at Your Prep Sports
Ryan Murken
Your Prep Sports
The first thing I did after accepting an offer to help launch Your Prep Sports was sit down and write a column introducing myself and the brand-new website to our audience.
Actually, that was task number two.
First, I had to pick a name for my new job.
Before a column explaining to readers the vision and motives behind Your Prep Sports could be published I needed a title.
Something to stick on a business card that made me sound more official than ‘guy writing about sports from his basement’.
Was I an editor or a reporter? Maybe.
A CEO or a manager? Not really.
The final decision from Your Prep Sports staffers was Director of Content. I rolled with it.
I knew it was the correct choice when my wife immediately began calling me director of (insert name of household task).
More than three years after I posted that first column that launched Your Prep Sports the site is better than ever.
Our website has been upgraded and our audience has grown but our mission has stayed the same – provide the best coverage possible to highlight the accomplishments of coaches and athletes in our area.
There have been thousands of stories on local teams, athletes and coaches since that first column appeared online in August of 2016.
What has not appeared on Your Prep Sports since was another column from the Director of Content.
Column writing is hard and has never been a personal strength of mine.
For most of my nearly 20-years in writing I’ve shied away from writing columns.
That is going to change going forward.
A personal goal for 2020 was to introduce more variety to Your Prep Sports with new and fresh content.
If you follow our site closely you have likely seen some of those new features.
There are more ideas in the hopper that will be rolled out soon as we strive to make Your Prep Sports even better.
One of those is my column “From the Director’s Desk”.
The column is a different approach to the same thing Your Prep Sports always aims to do – highlight the accomplishments of the many great players and coaches in our area.
Writing columns takes me out of my comfort zone and that’s part of what pushed it to the top of the 2020 list.
From the Director’s Desk will feature some of my own thoughts about everything that goes on in the Your Prep Sports area.
However, this website isn’t about its director, its many great writers and contributors or anyone on our amazing staff.
It is, and will always be, about Your communities, Your schools, Your teams, Your coaches, Your athletes and Your kids.
That is why the site has the name it does.
Remember, we put a lot of time and effort into naming stuff here.
