Softball Roundup: City High Stays Unbeaten With Sweep of Linn-Mar

City High has used the long ball to get off to an unbeaten start slugging a Class 5A-best 17 home runs during a 10-0 start to the season.
It was pitching and a big defensive play that helped the Little Hawks stay unbeaten on Thursday in a doubleheader sweep of Linn-Mar.
Ayana Lindsey struck out six in a 9-1 win in the opener and City High turned a triple play while hanging on for an 8-7 win in the nightcap of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Iowa City.
Class 5A fourth-ranked City High improved to 12-0 on the season and 10- in MVC play with the sweep while Linn-Mar dropped to 3-5 on the season and in conference play.
Lindsey allowed just one unearned run on four hits while striking out six to earn the win in game one.
Sydney Fellows went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI and Makayla Ribble homered for the Little Hawks in the opener. Brianna Bentler and Lindsey each added two hits in game one.
City High led 6-4 after three innings in the nightcap but Linn-Mar scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
The Little Hawks toed the score at 7-7 with a run in the bottom of the fifth but Linn-Mar threatened to break the game open in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs.
City High escaped the jam when Lindsey snagged a sinking line drive at shortstop, threw to Carey Koenig for a force at third and Koenig threw to Keli Potter at second to complete the triple play.
City High then scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning when Lindsey drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Fellows.
Fellows finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run while Brooke Bormann went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Ella Cook, Koenig, Potter and Alexa Fredericks all had hits and drove in runs in the 8-7 win.
Cook picked up the win allowing seven runs, four earned, on 15 hits in a complete game.

Liberty High Splits With Dubuque Senior
Liberty High split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader with Dubuque Senior on Thursday in Dubuque winning the opener 8-4 and dropping the nightcap 4-3.
The Lightning moved to 6-8 on the season and 6-4 in MVC play with the split while Dubuque Senior is now 5-8 and 4-7 in MVC play.
Kara Maiers picked up the win in game one allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out six and walking five.
Courtney Olson went 3-for-4 to lead a 13-hit Liberty High attack while Brylee Klosterman, Raquel Trolliet and Claire Geiman all had two hits.
Geiman and Addie Schmierer each drove in two runs in the win.
Dubuque Senior used a 3-run third-inning to take control of the nightcap and held on for a 4-3 win.
Kinsley Robertson was the tough luck loser for Liberty High allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out seven in six innings.
Klosterman was 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and two runs and Miranda Jones went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
