For the second time in three years City High will have a new boys basketball coach.
City High athletic director Terry Coleman announced in a release on Tuesday night that head coach Derek Roberts had tendered his resignation after three seasons leading the program.
“We thank coach Roberts for his three years of service to our school and basketball program,” Coleman said in the release. “Coach Roberts is a man of high integrity and will be remembered for his tremendous work ethic along with his significant work with our youth basketball program. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Roberts was hired in May of 2016 to replace Don Showalter who resigned to take a position with USA Basketball.
In three seasons leading the program Roberts compiled a 14-52 record that included back-to-back 5-17 seasons the past two years.
City High ended its season on Monday with a 68-48 loss to Waterloo East in a Class 4A substate quarterfinal.
According to the release current varsity assistant coach Brennan Swayzer has been named the interim head coach effective immediately.
Swayzer is a 2000 City High graduate and has been a part of the program for the past 10 years.
“We are confident in his ability to lead our program through this transition. Coach Swayzer will provide the stability and continuity our program needs as we transition into the 2019-2020 season,” Coleman said in the release. “If and when the ICCSD lifts the current hiring freeze we will evaluate our situation and determine a timeline for a more comprehensive search process.”
