Fifth-ranked Cedar Falls too Much For City High
Your Prep Sports
Two games into the season even the pickiest of football coaches would have a little bit of a tough time coming up with a noticeable weakness for Class 4A fifth-ranked Cedar Falls.
For the second straight week the Tigers showed few flaws rolling to a 47-0 win over City High in a non-district matchup of Mississippi Valley Conference rivals in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
Cedar Falls was impressive in all facets of the game while improving to 2-0, putting up 386 yards of total offense, posting a second consecutive shutout and converting on a pair of field goal attempts while stretching its win streak to six over City High.
City High (1-1) was held to 70 yards rushing on 34 carries a week after rushing for 403 yards in a season-opening win over Liberty High and finished with 152 yards of total offense.
Cedar Falls used a pair of first-quarter field goals from Matthew Cook to take an early 6-0 lead.
The Tigers flexed their offense muscle in the second quarter as junior quarterback Cael Loecher tossed scoring strikes of 19 yards to Logan Wolf and 44 yards to 6-foot-7 tight end Jackson Frericks.
Sam Gary added a 10-yard touchdown run in a 20-point Tiger second quarter that led to a 26-0 halftime cushion.
Wolf caught his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter, a 20-yard strike from Loecher and Gary added a 1-yard TD plunge.
A 6-foot-4 Northern Iowa recruit, Wolf finished with five receptions for 95 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 56 yards on five carries.
Loecher finished 10-of-14 passing for 191 yards and three touchdowns and Gary ran for 87 yards and two scores.
Meanwhile City High could do nothing against a stingy Cedar Falls defense led by Iowa linebacker recruit Jack Campbell.
Campbell had a team-high 11 tackles and Cedar Falls picked off five City High passes while posting its second shutout in as many games.
Tonka Hickman rushed for 35 yards to lead City High while sophomore quarterback Raph Hamilton ran for 22 yards.
Hamilton finished 5-of-11 through the air for 51 yards with three interceptions while senior Quincy Wells was 3-of-7 for 31 yards with a pair of interceptions.
Malik Kimber caught three passes for 31 yards and Riley Moore had two for 23 to pace the Little Hawks.
City High will return to action next week when it hosts Ames in the Little Cy-Hawk game at Bates Field.
