Smith Second; Regina Sixth After Opening Day at Class 2A State Golf Meet

WATERLOO – West Branch junior McGavin Smith is second and Regina is sixth after the opening day of the Class 2A state golf tournament on Tuesday at South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo.
Smith fired a one-under-par opening-round 71 on Tuesday and is one stroke behind 18-hole leader Trey Swanson of Rock Valley.
Smith shot an even-par 36 on the back nine to open his round on Tuesday and closed with a one-under-par 35 on the front nine after a birdie on the par-five ninth.
Regina shot a 321 on Tuesday and is sixth in the team standings after the opening 18 holes of the two-day, 36-hole event.
The Regals are 16 shots behind team leader Waterloo Columbus.
Rock Valley is second after the opening round with a 307 followed by Unity Christian and Grundy Center which each shot 313 and Aplington-Parkersburg which shot a 315.
Junior Daniel Clark shot a 76 to lead Regina and is in a tie for 12th place while Brendan Baker shot a 77 for the Regals and is tied for 18th place.
Teddy Melcher and Wyatt Kaeding each shot 84 for Regina.
