DES MOINES – The future for Reese Naeve is volleyball.
The state kill leader each of the past two seasons, Naeve is an Iowa State volleyball signee coming off an all-state senior season.
On Saturday Naeve said an emotional good bye to the sport of track as the Regina senior capped a brilliant career with a medal in the 100 hurdles for the fourth consecutive season.
Naeve finished sixth in the Class 2A 100 hurdles in a time of 15.32 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“It means everything. This has been my second favorite sport if not tied for my favorite sport forever and now it’s crazy that it’s done,” Naeve said. “I don’t want to leave the infield. It’s definitely bittersweet just how much track means to my family and my parents.”
During her four-year prep career Naeve built a volleyball resume as impressive as any in the state.
She had a program-record 2,525 career kills and 1,498 career digs while leading the Regals to the first back-to-back state tournament appearances in program history.
The track resume for Naeve is impressive as well.
Naeve finished eighth as a freshman in the 100 hurdles, fourth as a sophomore and was third last season.
She earned the fourth hurdle medal of her career and the fifth total state medal of her career with her sixth-place finish on Saturday.
Naeve also finished runner-up in the high jump as a sophomore in 2024.
“I think just reps, just going and hurdling all the time at practice, working on sprints and growing up and maturing you just get faster,” Naeve said. “I’ve just continued to hammer the fundamentals and it’s just kind of come together.”
Naeve entered the finals with the fourth fastest time from prelims but finished sixth in her final race.
Treynor junior Rylee Hemmingsen won the 2A 100 hurdle title in 14.63 while Leah Bolluyt of Spirit Lake was runner-up in 14.86 and Miranda Neighbor of Alburnett was third in 15.0.
“I’m going to miss track so much,” Naeve said. “All season I’ve been sad knowing I was going to run my last race ever but I maxed it out. I made it to finals that’s the furthest I could have gone so I’m happy about that.”
