Saturday State Track and Field Notebook: City High Caps Best State Showing Since 2022

DES MOINES – City High followed up a stellar opening two days at the state track and field meet with a strong finish on Saturday.
The result for the Little Hawks was a top-five team finish.
City High posted a trio of top-eight finishes on Saturday and finished fifth in the Class 4A team standings with 45 points.
The fifth-place finish in the best for City High since it finished third in 4A in 2022 and the 45 points are more than the Little Hawks had scored in the previous three state meets combined.
The strong weekend showing for City High was capped with a solid Saturday.
Senior distance standout Abigail Burns earned her second medal of the week with a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 in a career-best time of 4:35.24.
City High earned a pair of top-eight relays finish on Saturday.
The shuttle hurdle foursome of Gloria Konu, Bernadette Hamilton, Madeline Fraga and Willow Schultz finished eighth in a time of 1:07.02.
City High got an eighth-place finish from its sprint medley foursome of Dede Aboussa-Folly, Jaydah Kent, Ellie Fraga, Maeve Bowen-Burt in a time of 1:46.51.
Double Medal Day for Decker
Liberty High junior Keegan Decker added to his medal count on Saturday.
Decker picked up a pair of state medals on Saturday, earning top-eight finishes in the 4A 800 and 1,600 and finished the week with three medals.
After finishing fourth in the 3,200 on Thursday Decker placed sixth in the 1,600 in a time of 4:12.68 and was eighth in the 800 on Saturday in 1:53.4.
Sioux City North sophomore Kuma Gutema won both the 800 (1:51.14) and the 1,600 (4:09.63).
Big Day for CCA
Clear Creek Amana capped a strong weekend with three medals on Saturday highlighted by a pair of top-eight relay finishes.
The Clippers finished in the top eight in the shuttle hurdle and 4×100 and sophomore Addilyn Scheetz added a medal in the 100 hurdles.
Scheetz finished sixth in the 100 hurdles in a career-best time of 14.97 and anchored the Clipper shuttle hurdle relay team to a fifth-place finish.
Sydney Pfeiffer, Bella Behrens, Jaylin Herring and Scheetz finished fifth in the 3A shuttle hurdle in a time of 1:06.26.
The Clipper 4×100 relay team of Anna Johnson, Thea Nelson, Elizabeth Timmerman and Scheetz finished seventh in 48.89.
Busy Day for Gangba
Regina senior sprint standout Edwin Gangba had a busy final day at Drake Stadium.
Gangba secured three medals on Saturday, posting top-eight finishes in both the 2A 100 and 200 and anchored the Regina 4×100 relay team to an eighth-place finish.
Gangba finished seventh in the 100 in 11.1 and was sixth in the 200 in a time of 22.08.
The Regina 4×100 team of Philip Swen, Gabriel Hegelheimer, Gabe Schuessler and Gangba finished eighth in 43.77.
Solon Adds to Relay Medals
Solon capped the weekend with a pair of relay medals on Saturday.
The Spartan sprint medley relay team of Piper Stahle, Marin Ashbacker, Tenley Levin and Jerzey Haluska finished eighth in 3A in 1:49.93.
Solon’s 4×400 team of Jerzey Haluska, Mailee Schmidt, Ava Rolwes and Tenley Levin finished eighth in a time of 4:01.31.
Attendance Record
The Saturday attendance of 10,758 was an all-time record for a Saturday at the state meet.
The three-day attendance total of 39,627 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines was the third highest total of all-time.
