Before the action gets rolling on Saturday night Your Prep Sports takes a look at the three state final matches featuring area wrestlers.
Class 3A
113 – No. 1 Diego Robertty (38-1) Fr., West High vs. No. 2 Carew Christensen (41-3) Jr., Waukee Northwest
Robertty will attempt to become the fourth freshman state champion in West High history on Saturday while completing an impressive run through the 113-pound bracket.
Top-ranked Robertty has defeated the third and fourth ranked wrestlers on his way to the title match and can complete a sweep of the top five with a win over second-ranked Carew.
Robertty advanced to the finals with back-to-back decisions over fourth-ranked Cain Crosson of Indianola and avenged his only loss of the season with an 11-9 win over Jack Wallukait of West Des Moines Dowling.
Christensen (41-3) is a two-time state medalist that finished fifth as a freshman and seventh last season at 106 pounds.
Christensen has a pair of tech fall wins and a 4-0 decision over fifth-ranked Drake Pelton of Waukee on his way to the finals.
The only in-state losses for Christian this season came to Class 1A top-ranked finalist Kaiden Belinsky of Don Bosco and a first-period pin by Robertty at the state dual meet earlier this month.
Class 2A
106 – No. 2 Anderson Osgood (45-3) Soph., Solon vs. No. 1 Jackson Parmater (37-2) Soph., Vinton-Shellsburg
Two familiar foes and WAMAC Conference rivals meet for the gold at 106 pounds in Class 2A.
Osgood and Parmater will meet for the fourth time in a little more than a month on Saturday evening.
Parmater defeated Osgood 19-1 on January 8 and won a 9-1 decision in the finals of Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational on January 17.
Osgood won the most recent meeting with a 3-1 decision over Parmater in the finals of the WAMAC Conference Meet on January 31.
Parmater finished fourth last season at 106 pounds and his only loss this season to anyone other than Osgood was a 4-0 setback against Class 1A top-ranked state finalist Ty Martin of Don Bosco 4-0.
At the state tournament Parmater has posted two pins and a 14-5 major decision over seventh-ranked Luke Walsh of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.
Parmater pinned fourth-ranked Hayden Splendore of Perry in the quarterfinals
Osgood has been dominant in his state meet debut outscoring state tournament opponents 54-4 in three wins by tech fall including an 18-0 win over Jackson McGonegle of Center Point-Urbana in the semifinals.
285 – No. 2 Lucas Feuerbach (46-2) Jr., Solon vs. No. 1 Eaghan Fleshman (54-2) Soph., Alburnett
Friends and offseason training partners Lucas Feuerbach and Eaghan Fleshman have seemingly been a collision course for a 2A heavyweight showdown all season.
While the two are friends outside of the season Saturday night will be all business for Feuerbach who is seeking his first state title after a runner-up finish last season at 215 pounds.
“All summer we practiced together, he’s a great guy I have nothing against him but it’s just wrestling, nothing personal,” Feuerbach said of Fleshman. “I don’t think we’ve talked for the last four months since he moved up to heavyweight and I think we will still continue to be great friends after but right now we aren’t really friends.”
Fleshman, who was sixth last season at 215 pounds handed Feuerbach his only two losses this season.
Top-ranked Fleshman won a 5-3 decision on December 6 and added a 4-1 win in sudden victory over Feuerbach in a regional dual on February 3.
The lone two losses this season for Fleshman have come to top-ranked 3A wrestlers in Bettendorf 215-pound finalist Lincoln Jipp and three-time state champion and 3A 285-pound finalist Dreshaun Ross of Fort Dodge.
Fleshman defeated sixth-ranked Kane Mahler-Moreno of Woodward-Granger 11-1 in quarterfinals and downed fith-ranked JT Kelso of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows 8-0 in semifinals.
Feuerbach returned to the state finals with a first-period pin of third-ranked Layne Kleppe of North Fayette Valley.
