FORT DODGE – Over the past decade Solon has established itself as one of the most consistently successful programs in the state.
The Spartans added to that growing list of state meet success on Saturday.
In its ninth consecutive appearance at the state meet Solon finished 13th on Saturday at the Class 3A state meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
The lineup for Solon on Saturday was filled with runners that helped build on the Spartans’ tradition of success.
Solon had six multi-year state qualifiers compete on Saturday as the Spartans finished with 257 points.
Seniors Ava Rolwes and Falyn Svalstad were both four-time state qualifiers while juniors Liv Nelson and Addison Seamans are already three-time state qualifiers.
Junior Kinley Mai and sophomore Mailee Schmidt were making their second state meet appearances.
“Last night we talked about the history of the Solon cross country program and how they’ve been here the last nine years and two of our seniors have been on four of those teams,” Solon coach Emy Williams said. “We have two juniors that have been here three times and it just says a lot about how hard they work and the expectation they set for themselves year in and year out to come back to the state meet.”
Seamans led Solon on Saturday finishing 51st overall in a time of 20:10, her second consecutive 51st place finish at state.
Schmidt finished 66th overall in a time of 20:24.7 while Svalstad placed 69th in 20:30.1.
Svalstad finished in the top 95 at state each of her four trips to Fort Dodge including a pair of top-50 finishes.
Nelson was 81st in 20:37.2, senior Laeni Hikle was 88th in 20:49.9, Mai was 106th in 21:19.2 and Rolwes was 127th in 22:02.5 in her final state meet appearance.
Pella claimed its fifth consecutive 3A state title, putting four runners in the top 12 and finishing with 34 points.
Des Moines Christian was runner-up with 127 points followed by Williamsburg with 151.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon senior Evelyn Moeller won the individual title in 17:07.5.
“Class 3A it’s not an easy place to continue that and keep coming back it’s a really talented class right now,” Williams said. “It’s gotten faster so it’s a testament to them and how hard they’ve worked to get back here year after year.”
In the Class 3A boys race Solon junior Anders Holmes finished 64th overall in a time of 17:09.3.
A state qualifier as a freshman, Holmes missed a state meet berth last season but returned to the state meet on Saturday.
“He was fighting some injuries last year and to overcome and that and come back and be stronger this year was a fun thing to see,” Williams said. “Hopefully that will spur on our boys team because I think they can be back here next year.”
