Five Your Prep Sports area volleyball teams will open the season next week ranked in their respective classes.

West High, Liberty High, Clear Creek Amana, Solon and Regina all appeared in the preseason volleyball rankings released on Wednesday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

A state qualifier last season, West High opens the season ranked second in the Class 5A rankings trailing only top-ranked and defending 5A state champion Waukee Northwest.

West High was 27-6 last season and reached the state tournament for the first time since 2016.

Liberty High is ranked seventh in the preseason 5A rankings following a 24-11 season a year ago in which the Lightning advanced to a 5A regional final.

Clear Creek Amana is fifth in the Class 4A rankings.

The Clippers were 42-4 and reached the 4A semifinals last season.

Clear Creek Amana trails top-ranked Norwalk, Sioux Center, Sioux City Heelan and Western Dubuque in the Class 4A rankings.

Solon is 14^th in the Class 3A rankings and Regina is No. 10 in the Class 2A rankings.

Solon was 29-10 last season and advanced to a 4A regional final while Regina went 30-14 last season and qualified for the state tournament for the second consecutive season.

Other top-ranked teams in the preseason rankings are Cherokee in Class 3A, Grundy Center in Class 2A and Janesville in Class 1A.
