West Branch Junior Smith Finishes Third; Regina Fifth at Class 2A State Golf Meet

WATERLOO – West Branch junior McGavin Smith continued his climb up the Class 2A golf standings on Wednesday.
Smith followed up a 13th place finish last season by placing third at the 2A state meet on Wednesday at South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo.
Smith shot a one-over-par 73 on Wednesday to close with a 36-hole total of 144 at the two-day event, five strokes behind individual champion Judd Jirovsky of Grundy Center.
Jirovsky followed up an opening-round 73 on Tuesday with a bogey free six-under-par round of 66 on Wednesday to claim the second individual title of his career and first since 2023.
Last season Smith was 13 with a 36-hole score of 153 at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo.
This season Smith was nine strokes better at South Hills, closing his two-day tournament with a one-under-par 35 on the back nine on Wednesday.
After shooting a 37 on his first nine holes on Wednesday Smith had birdies on the par-five third, and par-five ninth to finish with a two-day total of 144.
Regina had a pair of top-15 finishers on Wednesday on its way to a fifth-place team finish.
Juniors Daniel Clark and Brendan Baker each shot a 75 on Wednesday to finish 10th and 11th respectively.
Clark opened with a 76 on Tuesday and played the final 17 holes one over par on Wednesday while finishing with a two-day score of 151 to place 10th overall.
Baker followed up an opening-round 77 with a 75 on Wednesday that included an even-par 36 on the front nine to finish tied for 11th with a two-day total of 152.
Behind Clark and Baker Regina shot a 309 on Wednesday to finish fifth in the 2A team standings with a 36-hole total of 630.
Junior Klingeman and sophomore Wyatt Kaeding each improved their scores on Wednesday while finishing in a tie for 41st.
Klingeman shot a second-round 78 to finish with a 165 and Kaeding fired an 81 on Wednesday to match Klingeman with a 36-hole total of 165.
Sophomore Teddy Melcher shot a 172 for Regina and Corbin Daniel shot a 184 for the Regals.
