VAN HORNE – Clear Creek Amana head coach Ben Robison went with a change of plans for the WAMAC Conference meet this season.
Rather than focusing on the conference meet as a leadup to next week’s 3A state qualifier Robison shifted his lineup from what the Clippers will roll out next Thursday.
“In the past this has always been our lead up to what’s happening next week at districts but we came in with a totally different philosophy on the boys side this year,” Robison explained. “We ran kids in places that aren’t in our norm and we are going to go a different direction next week.”
The philosophy may have changed but the results sure didn’t.
Clear Creek Amana claimed its second consecutive WAMAC Conference title and fourth crown in the past six seasons on Thursday at Benton Community High School in Van Horn.
The Clippers rolled up 129 points to outdistance the host Bobcats by 32 points.
Vinton-Shellsburg was third with 84 and Solon finished fourth with 81.5 points.
“It never gets old,” Robison said. “Every time I think about being done I think about the butterflies I get coming in here and I know that we should keep rolling.”
Clear Creek Amana got contributions from up and down its star-studded lineup on Thursday, employing a team effort to outdistance the WAMAC field.
The Clippers scored in 17 of 19 events, posted eight top-four individual finishes and double scored in four different individual events.
“Winning this meet is a big deal for us, it feels like all the work we put in is paying off,” Clear Creek Amana sophomore Quade Jensen said. “It’s amazing.”
Clear Creek Amana got individual titles from junior Tay Seals in the 110 hurdles and sophomore Carson Meskimen in the 1,600 but did most of its damage in the relays.
The Clippers finished in the top six in all seven relays, posting six top-two finishes including wins in the sprint medley and distance medley.
“It was a big emphasis to score a lot of points tonight and we wanted to stack some relays and see where we were at,” Clear Creek Amana senior Jackson VanHorn said. “I think it went really good.”
Jensen anchored the Clipper sprint medley team to a win in 1:33.1 and VanHorn ran the 800-meter anchor on the Clipper distance medley team that won in a WAMAC Conference record time of 3:34.56.
VanHorn was also on the Clipper 4×800 relay team that finished runner-up in 8:09.57 and finished third in the 800 in 2:00.76.
“I was pretty happy with it,” VanHorn said. “The relays were really good and to end it with a pretty good open 800 I was pretty happy.”
Jensen was just as busy.
He ran the 400-leg on the winning distance medley relay team, was part of the runner-up 4×200 team and anchored the Clipper 4×400 team to a runner-up finish in 3:22.02.
“I went out and did my best and prepared the best I could,” Jensen said. “Every race I am in I put my best effort out there and tonight I got to do that four times.”
Seals set a WAMAC record in the 110 hurdles winning in 13.77 and added runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 before anchoring the Clipper 4×100 team to a runner-up finish in 43.18.
Meskimen won the 1,600 in a WAMAC-record time of 4:25.53 and was runner-up in the 3,200 in 9:36.06.
“Things went really well tonight,” Robison said. “It was a big team effort. We picked up points in areas I didn’t know that we would and made up some slack where we fell just a little short so great team effort. The whole deal tonight was just score points and we came out and killed it.”
Solon was led by freshman standout Mac Svalstad who set at meet record while winning the 800 in 1:57.41 and was runner-up in the 400 in 49.56.
Svalstad anchored the Spartan 4×400 relay team to a title in a meet-record time of 3:21.99.
Solon also got a runner-up finish from freshman Easton Shipley who cleared 6-2 to finish second in the high jump.
