Clear Creek Amana Comes up Short Against District Leader Newton

Clear Creek Amana pushed district leader Newton to the limit on Friday but came up short of an upset against the Cardinals.
Newton held off a late Clear Creek Amana rally in a 31-19 win over the Clippers in a Class 4A, District 4 showdown at Clipper Field in Tiffin.
Four different players scored touchdowns for Newton as the Cardinals improved to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in District 4 contests.
Clear Creek Amana dropped to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in district play with the loss.
The Clippers struck early as sophomore quarterback Texton Bollers connected with Aren Schlemme on its opening possession to take an early 7-0 lead.
Newton answered back with a 26-yard touchdown strike from Caden Klein to Gabe Otto to tie the game at 7-7.
An Aiden Gross field goal gave Clear Creek Amana a 10-7 lead but Newton took the lead for good before the half when Klein scored on a 2-yard run with four seconds remaining in the second quarter.
A second Gross field goal cut the margin to 14-13 in the third quarter but Newton scored the next 10 points to take a 24-13 lead.
Clear Creek Amana wouldn’t go away as the Clippers cut the lead to 24-19 on an Ethan Vice 1-yard touchdown run with 3:58 remaining.
However, Newton responded with a touchdown drive capped by an 18-yard run by junior Isaiah Hansen with 1:04 left.
Bollers completed 14-of-26 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown in his first career start.
Schlemme had two catches for 99 yards and a touchdown and Tay Seals caught seven passes for 58 yards.
Ian Kelley rushed for 53 yards and Vice ran for 33 yards and a touchdown for the Clippers.
Sophomore Nolan Dao had a team-high 13 tackles for Clear Creek Amana while Schlemme had eight tackles and Seals had five tackles and recovered a fumble.
Dylan Schrock had four tackles and a sack for the Clippers.
