CORALVILLE – Shaona Emmanuel said on Thursday that her season would be determined by how she responded to an opening-round loss at the state wrestling tournament.
Four matches later the season is still going for the City High junior.
Emmanuel (36-6) continued an impressive roll through the 155-pound consolation bracket on Friday posting two more first-period pins while advancing to the Class 2A third-place match set for Friday evening in a session that begins at 6 p.m. at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
Following an opening-round loss to Amaziah Twillie of Burlington on Thursday morning Emmanuel has rattled off four consecutive wins, all by first-period pin.
None of the four consolation victories for Emmanuel have lasted longer than 1:25 with her two latest pins in Friday mornings’ session coming in 33 seconds and 67 seconds.
Third-ranked Emmanuel pinned ninth-ranked Abigail Chyma of South Tama in 33 seconds in her first match on Friday morning.
In the consolation semifinal Emmanuel needed just 1:07 to pin Twillie in a rematch of her opening-round bout.
Emmanuel will face sixth-ranked Marlee Pittet (38-5) of Western Iowa in the 155-pound third-place match on Friday evening.
Liberty High sophomore Peyten Van Dyke wrapped up her season on Friday morning with an eighth-place finish in Class 2A at 155 pounds.
Van Dyke dropped a third-round consolation match to seventh-ranked Kalen Jo Westerfield (36-11) of Council Bluffs Lewis Central.
In the seventh-place match Van Dyke (23-8) was pinned by Chyma in 5:01.
West Branch senior Teagyn Hartz concluded her season on Friday morning with a seventh-place finish in Class 1A at 190 pounds.
Hartz (36-5) dropped a third-round consolation match to No. 11 Emma De Jong (35-7) of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley but responded by pinning sixth-ranked Ellen Gerlock (28-8) of SWAT in 2:28 in the seventh-place match.
Hartz becomes the second IGHSAU state medalist in West Branch history, matching Emmersen Thomas who finished seventh at 110 pounds in 2023.
Hartz posted an impressive 83-18 record the past three seasons and became the second member of her family to earn a medal at the state girls tournament, joining older sister Madelyn Hartz who medaled in the final year of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association tournament in 2022.
“It means a lot because I know my sister cares a lot,” Hartz said. “It means a lot to me to follow in those footsteps.”
