SOLON – It’s been a busy spring for Solon junior two-sport athlete Sydney Dee.
A member of the Solon golf and track and field teams Dee has spent her spring juggling her schedule and splitting time between both sports.
Competing in two sports simultaneously is impressive but what has been even more remarkable is the success that Dee has enjoyed in both.
Dee is a state qualifier in both golf and track, helping the Spartans reach the Class 3A state golf meet scheduled for later this week just a few days after competing in two events at the state track and field meet last weekend.
“I have really enjoyed it,” Dee said. “This has been my favorite time of high school. I love everybody on the track team, I love all the track coaches and I am really happy I went for it with that because I helped out the team and I think that is really cool.”
As busy as this spring has been for Dee the most hectic stretch came last week and the junior was at her best during a 24 hour stretch in which she helped Solon reach the state golf meet for the second time in three years and made her debut at the state meet.
Dee shot an 82 to place fifth at the Class 3A, Region 4 golf meet last Wednesday helping the Spartans to a runner-up finish and a spot at the 3A state meet.
On Thursday, Dee finished 21st in the 3,000 at the Class 3A state track and field meet in a time of 11:31.66.
“I definitely enjoy both,” Dee said. “It’s hard to compare because with golf it’s very nerve wracking playing with really good players but I think track can make me nervous too.”
Dee also finished 18th in the 1,500 in 5:13 on Saturday and will put the finishing touches on her hectic spring season at the 3A state golf meet this week.
The key to success for Dee while dividing her time between two sports is managing her schedule.
Working around school Dee was able to find time not just to compete in both track and field and golf but to excel in both.
Earlier this month Dee won the 1,500 and finished second in the 3,000 at the WAMAC track meet and finished fourth at the WAMAC Super Meet golf meet title four days later.
“I have a really flexible schedule right now with school so if I want to do something in the morning I can run a workout or go hit on the range in the morning,” Dee said. “The track coaches are very understanding, she just sends me all the workouts and lets me go to golf when I need to. Neither side is trying to fight over the time that I have.”
