TIFFIN – With a reworked roster full of first-year contributors and players in new roles the expectation was for Clear Creek Amana to be at its best later in the season.
As the postseason approaches Clear Creek Amana are rolling and it has been one of the few Clipper returners that has been at the center of the late season surge.
Junior guard Beckett Boeset put together one of the best three-game stretches in program history over the past week helping Clear Creek Amana (13-5) stretch its winning streak to a season-best five games.
“I feel like my confidence has always been high but it’s gone up, especially in our team, the way we are playing it has gotten way higher,” Boeset said. “The consistence in all the guys has made that confidence go up.”
Boeset has been outstanding in his first year as a full-time starter leading Clear Creek Amana in scoring, rebounding assists and steals.
The later the season gets the better Boeset has been and the more Clear Creek Amana has clicked.
In consecutive double digit wins over WAMAC West Division opponents Williamsburg, Vinton-Shellsburg and Benton Community, Boeset has averaged 32.3 points, 8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 58 percent from the floor.
He had career-high point totals in back-to-back games last week.
Boeset scored 37 points on 13-of-16 shooting with nine rebounds in a 71-53 win over Williamsburg.
He followed it up with a career-high 38 points, six rebounds and four assists in a 74-54 win at Vinton-Shellsburg.
“I’ve tried to work on just being a guy that is consistent,” Boeset said. “Even if it’s not scoring, whoever has the hot hand at the time gets the ball, but even if it’s not that just keep pushing the consistency in our team.”
Last season Boeset averaged 5.4 points and 3 rebounds per game while coming off the bench on a senior-heavy Clear Creek Amana squad that won 19 games.
He spent the offseason rounding out his offensive game in preparation for a much larger role this season.
“He is put the most time in of anybody,” Clear Creek Amana coach Brandon Clubb said. “He has really embraced that this is what he wants to do so he was already in a decent spot at the end of the last year but he really elevated as far as working on his own, playing club and doing everything he can do to get better. That’s his goal is to go play at the next level and last year was his little taste and he’s just springboarded it.”
Boeset didn’t just work on his on-court game.
With the graduation of eight senior contributors from last year’s team Boeset prepared to take on a larger leadership role this season both on and off the court.
That preparation has been integral in the Clippers’ success.
“The main focus for me has been leadership,” Boeset said. “We have a younger team, way less experience than last year so just trying to take on a leadership role is important for me.”
On the court Boeset has blossomed into one of the best players in Class 3A.
The 6-foot-3 guard is averaging 21.1 points per game, which ranks ninth in Class 3A, while shooting 52 percent from the field including 49 percent (32-of-66) from 3-point range.
Boeset is also shooting 79 percent from the free throw line (73-of-92) while leading the Clippers in attempts and free throw makes.
“Last year I was more of an in the paint kind of scorer, maybe a couple of 3s here and there,” Boeset said. “This offseason I worked hard on my mid-range, my floaters and threes and I was just trying to level it out and create an opportunity to score with whatever they are giving me.”
Boeset is also averaging 7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game. \
“He’s physical, he’s put together for a guard and he really likes to get downhill and he finishes around the rim,” Clubb said.
