MARION – Clear Creek Amana sophomore Aren Schlemme had a succinct description of his performance at the WAMAC Conference track and field meet on Thursday.
“It was all right,” Schlemme said with a smile.
That statement may just be the understatement of the season by the breakthrough star of the year.
Schlemme won two individual titles, added another relay crown and was a member of a runner-up relay team in an impressive performance on a soggy night at Marion Stadium.
Schlemme won titles in the long jump and 110 hurdles, anchored the Clipper shuttle hurdle relay team to a title and ran the anchor on the runner-up 4×100 relay team while helping Clear Creek Amana to a third-place team finish.
“He was great,” Solon coach Ben Robison said of Schlemme. “As a sophomore being able to start big, continue big and now finish big, he is in a really good spot right now.”
The breakthrough night for Schlemme was a part of an impressive evening for Clear Creek Amana as the Clippers racked up 88 points to finish behind Solon which won its second straight WAMAC team title and runner-up Williamsburg.
The Clippers won four events adding titles in the shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays while scoring in 13 of 19 events.
“Our whole deal tonight was lets rack up as many as we can,” Robison said. “I felt like we used him the best way we could of tonight.”
Schlemme was the star.
The sophomore won the long jump with a leap of 21-3 ¼ and added a title in the 110 hurdles in 14.93.
“I was surprised by my time in the hurdles because I thought it was bad,” Schlemme said. “But I ended up being happy with what I ran.”
Schlemme anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to a title in a WAMAC meet record and school record time of 1:00.37.
He was part of the Clipper 4×100 squad that finished runner-up in 43.91.
“It was a good night,” Schlemme said. “We wanted to score as many points as we could and I think we did that.”
Tay Seals finished runner-up to Schlemme in the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.22 and Isaac Sorensen was third in the 800.
Sorensen anchored the Clipper distance medley relay team to a win in 3:38.77.
“I am jacked for our guys,” Robison said. “We put a lot of really good stuff together with young kids. I am really excited about where we are going into next week.”
