MOUNT PLEASANT – Running a lifetime best is almost always cause for a celebration.
That wasn’t the case for Clear Creek Amana senior Silvana Kabolo last week.
Kabolo ran a career-best 15.1 in the 100 hurdles at the WAMAC Conference meet last week but wasn’t in the mood to celebrate after finishing second in the event to Solon senior Sophia Stahle.
“I ran my best time but it was a humbling experience,” Kabolo said.“I looked back at the race and saw what I could improve on and worked on my technique down and doing anything I could do to get better.”
Kabolo was better on Thursday.
Much better in fact.
Kabolo blazed to a new career-best time of 14.86 to win the 100 hurdles at the Class 3A state qualifying meet at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex in Mount Pleasant.
“Coming out of WAMACs I think she was on a mission and she executed flawlessly,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robinson said of Kabolo. “That’s the best out of the blocks I’ve ever seen her run and that was a full complete race so she’s in a dang good spot.”
The 100 hurdle title was part of a strong day for Kabolo who helped two Clipper relay teams secure automatic berths to the Class 3A state meet that opens May 18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Kabolo anchored the Clipper shuttle hurdle relay team to a runner-up finish in 1:06.94 and ran on the 4×100 team that finished second in 50.71.
The strong day from Kabolo helped Clear Creek Amana finish runner-up to defending 3A state champion Solon with 126 points.
“I think we had a really good night,” Robison said. “I think we definitely over-performed in some areas, I think there are some areas that we are on the fence about but largely I think our kids had a really good night.”
Clear Creek Amana had three individual champions on Thursday as Kira Barker won the 1,500 and Emma Descourouez won the long jump.
The highlight of the night for the Clippers came from Kabolo who avenged her only loss of the season outside of the Drake Relays in the 100 hurdles.
Stahle ran a 15.07 to edge Kabolo at the WAMAC meet last week.
On Thursday Stahle was the only runner other than Kabolo to break the 16-second mark in the event but was nearly half a second behind the Clipper senior in 15.31.
“I went into that meet last week I was supposed to get first and when Sophia beat me that motivated me a lot for today,” Kabolo said. “She really has pushed me this whole season because she has gotten really good and having that competition has been really good.”
Kabolo and Stahle have been competing against each other in the hurdles since junior high.
That competition has turned both into state medalists.
“It is really fun to be able to run against someone as fast as Sophia,” Kabolo said. “Growing up with each other and seeing her do really well in her events too I just feel like we are a big family even though we are from different schools.”
Barker won the 1,500 in 4:59.22 with a late surge over the final 200 meters and Descourouez won the long jump with a mark of 16-11.
Clear Creek Amana got a runner-up finish from Bliss Beck in the high jump and had five relays earn spots at state with second place finishes.
Clear Creek Amana finished second to Solon in the 4×100, distance medley, 4×400 and 4×800.
“I think you run fast when you race against fast kids,” Robison said. “Obviously Solon is fast and I think our kids kind of know that because they see it all the time and I think it makes everybody better.”
The Clear Creek Amana boys had three automatic qualifiers, winning a pair of relays and getting a runner-up finish from freshman Aren Schlemme in the 100 hurdles.
The Clear Creek Amana foursome of Brock Hilsman, Cash Jensen, Jamie Hayes and Isaac Sorensen won the 4×800 in 8:13.08.
Hilsman joined Aren Schlemme, Joey Dains and Jensen to win the distance medley in 3:40.88.
“In the 4×8 I knew we had a pretty good chance,” Hilsman said. “In the medley I wasn’t really sure but I realized that we had a chance when we were in the lead when I got the baton so I knew I had to go.”
