DES MOINES – A historic season for the Clear Creek Amana wrestling program continued on Wednesday.

A program-record eight state qualifiers combined to go 4-4 in opening round matches at the Class 3A state meet at Wells Fargo Arena.

Sophomores Cale Nash, Nolan Howell and Kaden Phan and junior Ethan Williams all secured their first career state wins with victories in the 3A opening round.

All four of those wrestlers finished 1-1 on Wednesday after second-round defeats.

Nash (33-7) opened with a 18-5 major decision over Shandrel Thompson of Johnston at 113-pounds before being pinned by top-seeded Dru Ayala (35-2) of Fort Dodge in the second round.

Howell (34-17) won his opener at 126 pounds 10-4 over Kane Shimp of Cedar Falls before dropping an 11-5 decision to second-seed Cody Trevino in the second round.

Phan (33-13) won a 13-7 decision over Wyatt Weter of Newton in his opening-round match at 182 pounds and was pinned by top-ranked Gabe Arnold of City High in 44 seconds in the second round.

Williams (26-15) pinned Western Dubuque junior Derek Hoerner in 3:34 in his opener at 195 pounds and was pinned by third-seed Dreshaun Ross of Fort Dodge in the second round.

Four other Clippers lost their state meet debuts on Wednesday in the opening round.

Ankeny senior JJ Maihan won a 18-3 tech fall over Jose Mendieta (18-28) at 120 pounds and Cael Wiener of Ankeny Centennial pinned sophomore Jay Halverson (20-13) in 3:34 at 132 pounds.

Cedar Rapids Prairie junior Casey Kelley won a district rematch over senior Beck Arant (32-12) 6-4 at 145 pounds and Kaia Fox of Johnston won a 12-3 major decision over sophomore Benjamin Haughey (25-26) at 170 pounds.

All eight Clear Creek Amana wrestlers will compete in second round consolation on Thursday evening beginning at 6 p.m.
