Liberty High Puts Two Players on Class 5A All-state Team

In its first season in Class 5A Liberty High did more than just show it could compete, posting a 17-9 record and pushing eventual state champion Cedar Rapids Kennedy to the brink in an 11-inning regional final loss.
The Lightning also show it had two of the top players in the state’s biggest class during its first year in 5A.
Senior outfielder Brylee Klosterman and junior pitcher Kara Maiers each earned first team all-state honors when the Iowa Girls Coaches Association released its postseason honors last week.
In all, 10 Your Prep Sports area players earn all-state honors across four classes with six players earning first-team recognition.
An Iowa recruit, Klosterman earned all-state honors for the fifth straight season and third time in Class 5A.
Klosterman led the Lightning with a .459 batting average, 17 extra-base hits including six triples and five home runs.
A three-time first-team all-state selection, Klosterman scored a team-high 26 runs and drove in 18 more in her final prep season.
Maiers earned all-state honors for the first time following a breakthrough season in which she emerged as one of the most dominant pitchers in the state.
The junior posted a 10-3 record and a .76 ERA while allowing just 40 hits and striking out 155 in 92 1/3 innings.
City High had three players earn all-state honors in Class 5A as juniors Carey Koenig and Ayana Lindsey were first-team picks for the second year in a row.
Lindsey and Koenig tied for the state lead with 12 home runs while leading City High to an 18-5 record and a 5A regional final berth.
Lindsey hit .500 with 31 RBI and 39 runs scored and also went 8-5 with a 2.25 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 74 2/3 innings.
Koenig batted .484 with 12 home runs and 37 RBI and also walked 14 times and scored 29 runs.
Junior Ella Cook was a second-team pick for City High after hitting .333 with seven home runs and 23 RBI while going 8-0 with a 4.10 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings.
West High senior shortstop Kiahna Hill was a second-team pick for the second year in a row.
Hill hit .423 with 10 doubles, a home run and 20 RBI and also stole 17 bases and scored 18 runs.
Clear Creek Amana senior Ainsley Schrock and West Branch junior Nicki Henson were the other area players to earn be named to the all-state first team.
Schrock was a first-team pick in Class 4A after earning third-team honors last season.
The senior catcher hit .419 with a team-high six home runs and 37 RBI to go with seven doubles and 12 walks.
A four-time all-state pick, Henson earned first-team honors for the first time this season as a junior.
Henson led the Bears with a .500 batting average, 15 runs and 13 stolen bases.
Solon freshman Hilary Wilson and Regina junior Annie Gahan each earned all-state honors for the first time.
Wilson was a second-team selection in Class 3A after hitting .513 with 14 extra-base hits and 39 RBI.
The freshman shortstop had five home runs and scored a team-high 37 runs helping the Spartans to a 20-14 record.
Gahan was a second-team selection in Class 2A following a stellar junior season in which the junior shortstop led Regina in batting average (.378), runs (21), hits (28), doubles (5), home runs (4), RBI (15) walks (9), slugging percentage (.635) and on-base percentage (.440).
