After City High dropped Cedar Rapids Washington to 0-3 on the season with a 1-0 win at Kingston stadium in April City High coach Michael Prunty had a feeling the Warriors were on the verge of a breakthrough.
“After the game I told them ‘you guys are going to have a good season’ and they kind of said ‘how we are 0-4’,” Prunty explained on Saturday. “I told them they would have a good season just from how they were playing and they continued to have a good season.”
The Warriors continued to prove Prunty right on Wednesday.
Class 3A No. 13 Cedar Rapids Washington ran its winning streak to seven with a 2-1 win over No. 15 City High in a 3A, Region 4 semifinal at Kingston Stadium.
Julie Holt and Hannah Sacora scored goals of Sarah Altemeier assists as Cedar Rapids Washington won for the 11th time in 12 matches since it’s loss to City High on April 17.
City High trailed 1-0 at the half and 2-0 after Sacora scored in the 58th minute.
Sam Schroder pulled City High (10-7) within 2-1 with a goal in the 76th minute but the Little Hawks would get no closer.
The Warriors will face third-ranked West Des Moines Valley (15-2) in the Region 4 title match on Monday at 6 p.m. in West Des Moines.
The Tigers defeated Fort Dodge 10-0 in the other semifinal on Wednesday.
