Nearly a month since his prep football career came to an end, the accolades are still pouring in for West High senior Oliver Martin.

Martin was named Iowa’s 2016 Gatorade Player of the Year for prep football on Monday becoming the second player from West High to win the prestigious award.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Martin caught 85 passes for a state-best 1,272 yards and 14 touchdowns this season to help West High reach the state title game for the first time since 1999.

He is the first player from West High to be named the state’s Gatorade player of the year since Alex Kanellis won the award in 2004.

Martin also rushed for 38 yards, threw a 17-yard touchdown pass made 14 tackles and picked off two passes to help West High to a 10-3 record.

A threat in the return game, Martin averaged 26.1 yards per kickoff return and returned a kick 85 yards for a touchdown in the state title game.

Martin also averaged 18.8 yards on 21 punt returns, returning one for a touchdown.

A four-year starter, Martin leaves West High one of the top pass catchers in state history.

He posted back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his final two seasons and ends his career with 239 catches, 3,449 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Martin will compete in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 7 at the Alamo Done in San Antonio, Texas.
