TIFFIN – Second-ranked Clear Creek Amana threw everything it had at Williamsburg in its annual WAMAC West Division showdown on Tuesday.

The Raiders simply never flinched.

Williamsburg twice rallied from one set deficits, charged back from a pair of late fifth-set deficits and fought off a match point on its way to a stunning 15-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 17-15 win over 4A No. 2 Clear Creek Amana in Tiffin.

“Give them all the credit,” Clear Creek Amana coach Jackie Clubb said. “They were exceptionally scrappy and dug everything that we could give them.”

Williamsburg junior Kylee Suhr had four of her team-high 17 kills in the fifth set as the Raiders snapped a 10-match losing streak to Clear Creek Amana that dated back to 2017.

The last win for Williamsburg over the Clippers was October 10 of 2017 and the last WAMAC West Division win over CCA came all the way back in October of 2016.

That all ended on Tuesday as Kylee and Clarissa Suhr combined for 32 kills and six blocks as the Raiders improved to 16-8 on the season and 1-2 in WAMAC West Division play.

Clear Creek Amana dropped to 15-4 and 2-1 in WAMAC West matches.

“They were giving us tips, tools, throws anything that was getting them a kill,” Clubb said. “They kept doing it and doing it and we couldn’t execute the way we wanted to.”

Clear Creek Amana looked sharp early.

The Clippers never trailed in a 25-15 win in the opening set that ended with a 7-1 Clipper burst.

Clear Creek Amana junior standout Julia Schlarbaum had nine of her match-high 23 kills in the opening set.

“I think we got in a rhythm,” Clubb said. “We were in a rhythm in that first set and then we just couldn’t get into a rhythm after that.”

Williamsburg erased a 21-20 deficit in the second set by scoring six of the final seven points to close out a 25-22 win.

Clear Creek Amana controlled the third nearly from the outset in a 25-19 win but Williamsburg did the same in a 25-21 win in the fourth set.

The Raiders jumped to early leads of 5-2 and 7-4 in the fifth but Clear Creek Amana fought back.

Back-to-back kills by senior Bailey Simpson tied the set at 7-7 and Clear Creek Amana took a 10-8 lead on a kill by junior Delaney Vaske off a Raider over pass.

The fifth set was back and forth from that point on.

Simpson gave the Clippers a 13-12 lead with a tip kill but Kylee Suhr answered with a kill for the Raiders.

Clear Creek Amana had match point at 14-13 following a Williamsburg hitting error but the Raiders got a kill from Clarissa Suhr and an ace serve from sophomore libero Maggie Jensen to take a 15-14 lead.

Simpson tied the match one final time with her fifth kill of the final set but the Raiders scored the final two points on a serving error and a Jordyn Skaggs kill to secure the upset.

“We move on, we learn from it, this isn’t going to define the rest of our season there is no way we can let that happen,” Clubb said. “Our girls understand that and I know they are going to come back to practice and respond in the way that we want.”

Simpson finished with 17 kills and two blocks while Vaske had 11 kills for the Clippers.

Clear Creek Amana is back in action on Saturday at the Nevada Invitational.

“We just had the conversation that we have a really tough tournament on Saturday that we need to get some wins on and sometimes you need something to get you ready for that,” Clubb said.
