DES MOINES – After releasing her final throw Rachel Haack stepped out of the shot put ring, turned away from the field at Drake Stadium and toward the stands filled with fans.
Haack waved to a group of City High fans, coaches and athletes and blew kisses to the section of red-clad supporters that included her parents in the front row.
For Haack that moment, not a medal or a personal best throw, but a wave and kisses was the perfect encapsulation of a brilliant career.
“They have supported me, my coaches, my parents and all my teammates, for so long, and even though I didn’t get first they are just there and I wanted to say thank you to them,” Haack said. “I am so grateful for everything.”
If the moment was the perfect conclusion to a decorated prep career for Haack her performance in the 4A shot put was a nice prelude.
Haack finished runner-up with a mark of 44-9 while teammate Hannah Braun was eighth with a throw of 38-6 ¾.
Ottumwa senior Delilah Subsin won the title with a mark of 47-1. It was the first title for Subsin who finished fourth, third and second in the 4A shot put the previous three seasons.
“I know I did well,” Haack said. “I am a little sad and disappointed also just because I am senior, but I know I did well and I tried my best and that’s all I can ask for.”
It was the second consecutive top-four shot put finish for Haack who was fourth at the state meet last season with a mark of 42-3 ½.
The runner-up finish was also the second top-three finish of the week for Haack, a Colorado State recruit, who was third in the 4A discus on Thursday.
“My goal was to make the podium for both and that’s what I did so I am happy in that sense,” Haack said. “Obviously it would have been amazing to take home a state title just because I don’t have that but I know that I have really, really big things ahead of me. I’m not done so I am very excited.”
Haack leaves City High as one of the best throwers in program history.
She was a seven-event state qualifier and five-time medalist, three in the discus and two in the shot put.
The City High school record holder in the discus with four top-four finishes at the state meet Haack believes she left a legacy that has nothing to do with records, medals or distances.
“It’s tough because I am a bigger girl, I am a taller girl and growing up it’s hard to fit in but I found this love of track and I just try my best and try to do everything to get what I want and I just want people to remember me as being nice, and supportive and trying my best.” Haack said. “I am glad to leave a really good legacy behind at City High.”
The second consecutive day with double scorers in throwing events keyed another big day for City High as the Little Hawks double scored in the 400 hurdles.
Sophomore Maeve Bowen-Burt finished runner-up in the 400 hurdles and junior Willow Schultz was seventh.
The Drake Relays champion in the 400 hurdles, Bowen-Burt finished second in a time of 1:01.61, the 16th fastest time in state history.
Waukee junior Jana Maharry won the 400 hurdle title in a state meet record time of 1:00.11.
“I am happy,” Bowen-Burt said. “I am happy for Jana (Maharry), she deserves it after that fall at Drake, I am super happy for her and obviously I wish I could win but I am happy with second.”
Bowen-Burt was in a pack of several runners chasing Maharry after the second to last hurdle but surged to the runner-up finish over the final 75 meters.
“I knew I had to go, I had to pick it up,” Bowen-Burt said. “I wanted to win or place in the top three so I knew I had to focus up, pick up my knees and finish strong.”
Schultz finished seventh in a career-best time of 1:03.05.
City High closed Friday third in the Class 4A team standings with 38 points a half point back of second place Cedar Falls.
Waukee Northwest leads the 4A team standings with 63.5 points.
