CORALVILLE – Prior to this season West Branch had a pair of wrestlers that had appeared at the state tournament.

The Rushton sisters doubled that number on Thursday.

Finley Rushton and Sawyer Rushton each competed at the Class 1A state tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Sawyer Rushton, a freshman 100-pounder went 0-2 in her state meet debut on Thursday while Finley Rushton, a 105-pound junior, came up one win shy of a state medal.

Third-ranked Kennedy Bachman of MFL Mar-Mac pinned Sawyer Rushton in 3:51 in an opening-round match.

Sawyer Rushton (35-9) dropped her second match to Goldie Davis of South Central Calhoun via third-period pin.

Finley Rushton was pinned by fourth-ranked Sophia Calpito of Charles City in 1:27 in the opening round.

Finley Rushton (39-9) responded to the opening-round loss with an 11-2 major decision win over Armoney Adams of Van Buren in a first-round consolation match.

Rushton came up a win shy of a top-eight finish when she was pinned by ninth-ranked Sophia Carnes of Saydel in 3:41 in a second-round consolation match.
