Liberty High Qualifies Program-Record Eight Wrestlers For State Meet in Regional Runner-up Finish

Liberty High continued its strong season with an impressive performance at the Class 2A, Region 6 meet on Friday.
The Lightning qualified a program-record eight wrestlers for the state meet on its way to a runner-up team finish on Friday at South Tama High School.
Kate Eggleston, Kaitlyn Raue, Callum Wu and Peyten Van Dyke all won individual titles as Liberty High finished runner-up with 224 points.
Host South Tama won the team title with 243 points while Central DeWitt was third with 171 points.
Taylor Cavanh, Evalynn Karam, Acasia Lukalaba Ndomba and Evelyn Eggleston all secured runner-up finishes on Friday to secure spots at the state wrestling meet scheduled for February 5-6 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
Seventh-ranked Kate Eggleston (41-4) pinned her way to the 115-pound title on Friday.
Eggleston posted back-to-back first-period pins to reach the title match where she pinned Ava Hendricks of South Tama in 2:42.
Fifth-ranked Raue (39-5) went 3-0 on her way to the 125-pound title, posting back-to-back first-period pins before winning a 12-7 decision over No. 11 Kate Melody of Gilbert in the championship match.
Sixth-ranked Wu (38-7) won two matches to claim the 145-pound title, pinning No. 12 Paisley Bro of South Tama in 5:49 in the championship match.
Sixth-ranked Van Dyke (32-8) claimed the 155-pound title with a pin of Gilbert’s Cece Wagner in 2:57 in the championship match.
Fourth-ranked Cavanh (19-3) fell to top-ranked Siera Becker of Indianola 10-0 in the 105-pound title match and secured her spot at the state meet with a runner-up finish.
Seventh-ranked Evalynn Karam (36-8) won a wrestle back to earn a runner-up finish at 110 pounds and claim a spot at state.
Karam fell to sixth-ranked Greenley Grell of Central DeWitt 15-5 in the semifinals but responded with a pair of pins, including a pin of Jayva Gomez of South Tama in 3:05 in the wrestle back, to earn a state meet berth.
Lukalaba Ndomba (28-21) followed a similar path to a runner-up finish at 135 pounds.
Lukalaba Ndomba fell to Ava Perkins of South Tama in the semifinals but produced three consecutive first-period pins to earn a state berth.
Lukalaba Ndomba pinned Delaney Kueter of Central DeWitt in a wrestle back in 1:03 to earn the state meet spot.
Second-ranked Evelyn Eggleston (31-4) finished runner-up at 140 pounds to earn her spot at state.
Eggleston fell to No. 12 Maylee Rucker of South Tama 13-9 in the semifinals but earned her state meet spot with the runner-up finish.
