MARION – There’s no secret in the Solon wrestling room regarding when the Spartans want to be wrestling the best.
“I think some programs don’t talk about ‘we want to be wrestling our best at the end of our season’ and we talk about that as a team with our guys,” Hadenfeldt said. “It’s not a secret to our guys.”
That time is coming soon and it started for the Spartans on Saturday.
Sophomore Anderson Osgood and junior Lucas Feuerbach each won individual titles on Saturday to help Solon to a fourth-place team finish at the WAMAC Conference meet at Marion High School.
“Our coaches are always telling us this is the time we want to be our best,” Osgood said. “These are the times where practices get more intense and that’s a really good thing because we get better tuned for the postseason.”
Osgood won the 106-pound title on Saturday and Feuerbach capped a strong Solon showing that featured six top-four finishes with a title at 285 pound as the Spartans racked up 147.5 points.
Eighth-ranked Independence crowned three champions and won the team title with 215 points followed by West Delaware with 209.5 points and Williamsburg with 185.
“I feel good about where we are at as a team, I really do,” Hadenfeldt said. “We are going in the right direction and we can keep building off this.”
Osgood (39-3) earned the win of the day for the Spartans with a 3-1 victory over top-ranked Jackson Parmater (31-2) in the 106-pound title match.
Second-ranked Osgood scored the only takedown of the match 20 seconds into the second period on his way to his first win in three meetings with Parmater this month.
“As you could see during that match I was shooting a lot and I definitely took some shots I probably shouldn’t have but I wanted to score a lot,” Osgood said. “I wanted to try to widen the gap.”
Parmater won a 19-1 tech fall over Osgood in a dual on January 8 and added a 9-1 major decision victory in the finals of the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational on January 17.
Osgood got his redemption on Saturday allowing just a second-period escape.
“It was just one of those situations where the first time I saw him I wasn’t in great shape and the second time I just did some dumb things,” Osgood said. “Coming back in this third match I just had to fix a few things.”
Osgood went 31-17 as an undersized 106-pounder last season but cemented his status as a state title contender with the win over Parmater on Saturday.
“It’s huge for him,” Hadenfeldt said. “We have some wrestling to do before them but hopefully we see him again at state and hopefully it’s in the finals on Saturday night.
Feuerbach was equally impressive on his way to the 285-pound title and WAMAC Outstanding Wrestlers honors.
Second-ranked Feuerbach (39-1) posted a pair of first-period pins before earning a 17-2 tech fall over fourth-ranked Carson Grier of Williamsburg in the title match.
Feuerbach had defeated Grier 5-3 in a dual meet earlier this month.
“I told him before the match to go show what he could do,” Hadenfeldt said. “It’s fun to see kids work hard and to have it pay off for them. That’s the best thing about the sport for a coach.”
Jayden Steapp (33-13) finished runner-up at 126 pounds falling to top-ranked Adam Carey of Independence in the title match.
Carson Kidwell (35-11) finished third at 157 pounds, Jadyn Bevans (27-19) was fourth at 144 pounds and Kyler Jensen (14-9) was fourth at 215 pounds or Solon.
“I thought we wrestled well today for the most part up and down the lineup,” Hadenfeldt said. “Obviously there is work to do but we will get in the room tomorrow and watch some film and try to make some adjustments and be ready to roll on Tuesday and for the next couple of weeks.”
Clear Creek Amana had five top-four finishers and placed fifth as a team with 117 points.
Tytus Steapp (26-15) finished third at 120 pounds, Rowan Catherson (17-26) was third at 132 pounds and Aidan Schrock (33-13) was third at 190 pounds for Clear Creek Amana.
Cole Kasparek (35-10) was fourth at 106 pounds and Wyatt Iburg (33-12) was fourth at 113 pounds.
