TIFFIN – After two years as a role player coming off the bench Beckett Boeset has seamless stepped into an expanded role for Clear Creek Amana this season.
In his first season as a starter Boeset leads the Clippers in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals during a solid 10-5 start to the season.
While his stat sheet line exploded this season the biggest role for Boeset this season has been as a leader.
“I think the main focus for me has been leadership,” Boeset said. “We have a younger team with less experience than last year so trying to take on a leadership role is important for me. I just want to be a guy that’s consistent even if it’s not scoring the ball just being consistent.”
On Tuesday Boeset led by example.
Boeset poured in a career-high 37 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Clear Creek Amana to a 71-53 win over rival Williamsburg (3-13) in a WAMAC West Division contest in Tiffin.
The win was the third straight for Clear Creek Amana (11-5) and completed a season-sweep of Williamsburg after the Clippers won the first meeting 90-47 in Williamsburg last month.
“We just took advantage of the things they were giving us,” Boeset said. “We didn’t try to do too much this game. I feel like the last couple of games we’ve tried to do too much and tonight we just took advantage of what they gave us.”
Boeset scored 16 of his game-high 37 in the first quarter to stake Clear Creek Amana to an early 18-17 lead.
He added seven in the second quarter as the Clippers built a seven-point halftime advantage.
Boeset and the Clippers put the game away in the third quarter.
The 6-foot-3 junior guard had 10 points in the third quarter, including seven during an 13-2 Clipper run over the final five minutes that pushed the lead to 57-38.
“He’s physical, he’s put together for a guard and he really likes to get downhill,” Clear Creek Amana coach Bradon Clubb said of Boeset. “He finishes around the rim well I thought tonight he made better decisions as far as getting his teammates involved and then taking the shots that were there.”
Boeset added four assists on Tuesday as Clear Creek Amana shot 47 percent from the floor.
Myles Howell had 16 points and Alex DuBay had his second consecutive double-double, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
“We feel like we have a lot of kids that can hurt you in different ways so if somebody isn’t hitting we have other guys that can step up and obviously that happened tonight,” Clubb said. “When we’ve needed it, they’ve really come through.”
Boeset finished 13-of-20 from the floor and 3-of-5 from 3-point range while converting on all eight of his free throw attempts.
“Last year I was more of a in the paint type of scorer but this offseason I worked hard on my shooting and the mid range,” Boeset said. “I just tried to level it out and be able to score with whatever they are giving me.”
Dylan Weisskopf had 13 points for Williamsburg.
