No. 10 West Branch Downs Claims District Crown With Win at Fourth-ranked Bellevue

West Branch was already locked into a spot in the Class 2A playoffs prior to Friday night’s regular season finale.
The Bears made sure they will head to the postseason on a roll and as a district champion.
Class 2A No. 10 West Branch rolled up 330 rushing yards while claiming the 2A, District 5 title with a 43-20 win at fourth-ranked Bellevue on Friday at C.C. Hammann Field in Bellevue.
The win was the third in a row for West Branch which improved to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in district play.
Bellevue dropped to 7-1 and 4-1.
Opening-round playoff matchups will be released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Keaton Gates rushed for 266 yards and a touchdown and Cooper Gates ran for 71 yards and two scores as West Branch finished with 381 yards of total offense.
Brennen Dale passed for 51 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes to Conner Capper and also rushed for a touchdown as the Bears locked up the district title.
The West Branch defense limited Bellevue to a season-low 20 points and picked off senior quarterback Cal Bonifas three times.
Griffin Seydel, Dale and Lincoln Naber all had interceptions for the Bears.
Capper had a team-high 12 tackles and Seydel had nine stops for West Branch including a tackle for loss.
