DES MOINES – The state meet climb for Rachel Haack continued on Friday.
Haack has continued to move up the Class 4A throwing ranks each of the last three seasons.
On Thursday the City High junior finished fourth in the 4A discus, her highest finish in her third state-meet appearance in the event.
Friday Haack continued the climb.
Haack finished fourth in the Class 4A shot put with a career-best mark of 42-3 ½ at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“I am so happy, I met my goals and I got a pr so that was incredible, I wasn’t expecting that,” Haack said. “I was really happy with how it went.”
The fourth-place finish was the first shot put medal for Haack who finished 10th in the event last season.
It capped an impressive weekend for Haack who has improved her finish in every event in each of her three trips to the state meet.
“I competed well,” Haack said. “First time scoring in shot put and even though I wanted to get higher I am happy with how I did personally. I met my goals and I just like being here.”
Haack opened with consecutive throws of 38-2 ¾ and 37-6 ¾ before launching the best throw of her career on her third attempt.
The mark of 42-3 ½ was good for a top-five finish in an event won by Burlington sophomore Kylee Hill with a mark of 45-11 ¾.
Ottumwa junior Delilah Subsin was runner-up with a mark of 43-2 ½ and Mackenzie Fah of Pleasant Valley was third with a throw of 42-3 ½.
“It was one of the biggest rushes I’ve gotten in throwing because I hadn’t even hit 40 in my first two and then bam 42,” Haack said. “It just shows that it’s a mental sport and you have to bring yourself up.”
Wet weather leading up to the meet caused the shot put to be moved to the infield inside Drake Stadium this week.
Haack welcomed the change in venue and fed off the crowd on Friday.
“I loved throwing in the stadium,” Haack said. “Surrounded by everybody and the running events going and everyone cheering it’s a totally different vibe from usual throwing and it can be different but I love being surrounded by the people.”
The second medal of the week for Haack highlighted another strong day for City High which also got a top-eight finish in the distance medley relay.
The City High distance medley relay team of Dede Aboussa-Folly, Ellie Fraga, Maeve Bowen-Burt and Abigail Burns finished 8th in a time of 4:08.88.
