DES MOINES – From 2024 to 2025 there wasn’t much movement in the Class 4A girls discus standings at the state track and field meet.
Four of the top five finishers from 2024 accounted for the top four spots on Thursday at the state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Among the throwers to post a second consecutive top-five finish on Thursday was City High junior Rachel Haack.
For Haack, the continuity among the field from year to year has turned what were once competitors into friends.
“It’s so fun, the comradery among this group is crazy, I would consider some of these girls my friends,” Haack said. “When you are nervous and stressed its easier when you are talking with the other girls and having fun.”
Ottumwa junior Delilah Subsin won her second consecutive 4A discus title on Thursday with a mark of 158-8.
Burlington sophomore Kylee Hill was runner-up with a mark of 149-3 after a fourth-place finish last season while Pleasant Valley senior Gabrielle Ragins finished third a year after finishing runner-up.
Haack moved up one spot in the 4A pecking order this season, going from fifth a year ago to fourth with a throw of 137-5.
“I had a similar mindset to what I had last week at the state qualifier,” Haack said. “I am going out to have fun, top-five and 135 was kind of my goal and I hit that goal so I am really happy.”
Three of the final five attempts for Haack were over 132 feet, with her beset throw coming on her final attempt.
“The thing I was really happy about is I moved up each throw,” Haack said. “I got consistently better which is awesome and really helps you compete.”
Pierce Picks Up Medal
West Branch senior Alyssa Pierce added to her career medal count on Thursday picking up a medal for the second consecutive season in the Class 2A shot put.
A four-time state qualifier, Pierce finished fifth with a toss of 39-6 on Thursday, following a fourth-place finish last season.
Estherville-Lincoln Central seanior Hillary Ruschy won the 2A shot put with a mark of 43-1.
Hoeper Leaps to High Jump Medal
While Pierce and Haack added to their medal count Solon sophomore Kaden Hoeper earned the first state meet hardware of his career on Thursday.
Hoeper finished in a tie for sixth place in the Class 3A high jump clearing 6-1.
Hoeper finished deadlocked with Kyler Chapman and Reid Kluesner of ADM, and Parker Miller and Kanen DeYoung of Ballard who all cleared 6-1.
Benton Community junior Eli Patterson won the 3A high jump clearing 6-7.
