TIFFIN – Landon Prince shined bright on the state’s biggest state last week becoming just the sixth prep in history to sweep the Drake Relays throwing events.
The encore performance from Prince was perhaps even more impressive.
Prince posted a pair of personal bests while winning both the shot put and the discus titles at the Pacha Relays in Tiffin on Thursday.
“I feel like Drake set me up for this,” Prince said. “After Drake I feel even more confident with those numbers and I am hitting those more consistently. I know I can do it and I know I have more in the tank now it’s just doing it.”
Prince had top-20 all-time performances in both the shot put and discus on Thursday while building on his state-leading efforts in both events.
Prince won the discus with a toss of 190-4 and added a title in the shot put with a mark of 64-1 ½.
“I’ve had a really good week of practice,” Prince said. “I’ve been hitting personal bests all week in practice and I knew if I was able to come into today with a calm, collected mindset that I could launch some.”
The mark of 190-4 in the discus was more than five feet further than the previous best of 185-0 ½ that Prince set last Friday at the Drake Relays.
The 190-4 is the 17th best all-time in state history.
The shot put was the headliner for Prince on Thursday as he added nearly two feet to his previous career-best mark of 62-2.
“I had a really consistent series in the shot put,” Prince said. “I had four throws over 60 and my last two were 63 and 64. I was kind of relying on the crowd. I had a little clap going and it was fun.”
The wining throw of 64-1 ½ is the 10th best throw in state history.
“I’m not trying to focus too much on the outcome but these prs are crazy,” Prince said. “I’ve never thrown 64 before that was just in the moment I launched it but I know I can keep building.”
The two individuals titles from Prince were part of a big day for the Clippers on their home track.
Tay Seals won individual titles in the 100 and 200 and Clear Creek Amana won the 4×100 and 4×200 relays while cruising to the team title with 161 points.
Mount Vernon was runner-up with 102.5 points followed by Benton Community with 94 and Tipton with 78.
Regina was fifth with 48 points.
“The people around me are awesome so it’s nice to be able to do this at home,” Prince said. “I feel more comfortable moving across the ring here so it was awesome.”
Seals won the 100 in 10.94 and claimed the 200 title in 22.25 before anchoring the Clipper 4×100 relay team to a title in 43.31.
Brody Clubb was runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 51-3, Luke Higdon was runner-up in the high jump clearing 6-3 and Joey Dains was runner-up in the 200 in 22.63.
Edwin Gangba finished runner-up in the 100 in 11.23 and was third in the 200 in 22.67 to lead Regina while Brendan Olney was third in the 400 in 53.31 for the Regals.
