TIFFIN – Landon Prince and Tay Seals had already posted some impressive performances this season before the Clear Creek Aman Invitational.
The Clipper duo didn’t waste an opportunity to show off in front of the home fans on Thursday.
Seals and Prince each continued stellar starts to the season with perhaps their best individual efforts of the season on a strong night for Clear Creek Amana at its own invitational on a cool and breezy evening at Clipper Field in Tiffin.
Prince swept the throwing events, earning individual titles in both the discus and shot put while Seals anchored the Clippers to a trio of relay wins as Clear Creek Amana won seven events at the 12-team invitational.
“It was kind of cold and windy tonight and that affected some of our marks but I am proud of our kids,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “They are showing some resiliency and they are able to get some stuff done when it’s not the best out there.”
In its first home meet of the season Prince and Seals stole the show.
Prince set meet records in both the discus and shot put to continue his stellar start to the season.
Already the state leader in the discus this spring at 182-2, Prince unleashed a state-best toss of 60-9 ¾ to win the shot put title on Thursday.
“At the start of the year I wanted to throw 60 in the shot and 200 and the discus and I’ve already gotten to 60 so now it’s just getting to 200,” Prince said. “It’s exciting and now I just have to keep building.”
Prince closed out the throwing event sweep by winning the discus with a mark of 178-0, which broke the meet record by more than seven feet.
“It was jacked for discus,” Prince said. “The shot got me really excited and I had some throws in discus that were just a little out but I was really excited.”
Seals was just as impressive.
The sophomore teamed with Owen Rosenberg, Eliezer Mipata and Luke Higdon to win the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:03.11.
Seals then anchored the Clipper 4×200 relay team to a title in a school and meet-record time of 1:29.79.
“I would say 4×100 is my favorite but I was really happy with the 4×200 today because I was trying something new,” Seals said. “It definitely worked out so I am happy with that.”
An impressive anchor leg effort by Seals helped the Clipper 4×100 team to a title as Seals chased down a pair of runners over the final 100 meters to secure the win in 43.39.
“It’s an amazing feeling seeing people in front of you and knowing that you can go get them,” Seals said. “Knowing your team can help get you there is a big thing.”
Clear Creek Amana was runner-up in the distance medley relay and 4×800 relays.
“We really have six guys that we can interchange and it’s nice that Tay is versatile and hurdles are going to be his bread and butter when it’s all said and done but there are three other relays that we could use him on,” Robison said. “The great thing about Tay is he has really embraced our relays first mentality that we’ve had and he wants the relays to really be a thing.”
Dains added a title in the 200 in 22.33 and Jackson VanHorn won the 800 in 2:05.63 for the Clippers.
Solon senior Caleb Bock won the long jump with a leap of 20-5 ½ and West High got individual titles from Waleed Ibrahim in the 110 hurdles and Harel Gameti in the 100.
The Trojans also won the 4×400 and distance medley relays.
