Spring is here, April is right around the corner and that means that it is high school soccer season in Iowa.
The soccer season officially gets under way this week with the first day of competition on Monday.
Once again the Your Prep Sports area will be home to some of the best soccer teams in the state.
As the season gets underway here is a look at 11 boys soccer players in the Your Prep Sports area to keep an eye on this spring.
Daniel Fuentes
Senior, West High
One of the top players in the state Fuentes is coming off a brilliant breakthrough season in which he led West High in points and goals while earning first-team Class 4A all-state honors.
After scoring six goals in each of his first two varsity seasons Fuentes broke out last spring scoring a team-high 24 goals while helping West High to a 20-3 record and a spot in the Class 4A state semifinals.
Fuentes did more than score, tying for the team lead with eight assists on his way to earning first-team Class 4A all-state honors from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.
A first-team Mississippi Valley Conference all-Valley Division pick, Fuentes ranked second in Class 4A in both points (67) and goals (24) last season.
Jack Dancer
Senior, City High
A staple in the City High lineup each of the past three seasons Dancer is coming off the best season of his career last spring in which he earned all-state honors while helping the Little Hawks return to the Class 4A state tournament.
Dancer ranked second on the team with seven goals last season on his way to earning first team Mississippi Valley Conference all-division honors and second-team Class 3A all-state honors from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.
A leader for the Little Hawks, Dancer is a versatile player with the ability to make an impact all over the field.
Finn O’Toole
Junior, Liberty High
Already a two-year starter O’Toole is a prime candidate for a breakout season after an impressive sophomore season last spring.
O’Toole earned first-team Mississippi Valley Conference all-Mississippi Division honors last season as a sophomore after finishing with four assists and a goal while helping the Lightning to a 5-9 record.
Look for even bigger things from O’Toole this season as he adds to his career three goals and four assist totals.
Timmy Hosier
Senior, West Branch
A four-year starter, Hosier has been a cornerstone piece in the building of the West Branch program into one of best in Class 1A.
West Branch has posted a 45-8 record with Hosier in the lineup the past three seasons, a stretch that includes an 18-1 mark and a second consecutive Class 1A state tournament appearance last spring.
Hosier was a key part of a Bear back line that allowed just 14 goals and posted nine shutouts in 19 matches last season.
A Class 1A second-team all-state pick by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association as a junior last season, Hosier had two goals and two assists.
Laird Holden
Junior, Regina
Already a two-year starter Holden will look to build on what has been an impressive start to his career with a big-time junior season.
Holden led Regina in assists two seasons ago as a freshman and has helped the Regals post a 34-9 overall record and back-to-back Class 1A state semifinal appearances the past two seasons.
Last year as a sophomore Holden had a career-high six goals and added four assists to help the Regals to a 16-4 record.
With the top three goal scorers from last year’s semifinal squad that combined for 43 goals lost to graduation look for Holden to help fill that scoring void.
Reese Gingerich
Junior, West Branch
A candidate for a breakthrough season Gingerich appears poised to be the next prolific goal scorer for a program that has had a player score 20 or more goals each of the past four seasons.
Gingerich has posted scored 15 goals and added 14 assists over the previous two seasons and should be in line to be an even bigger part of the West Branch attack this season.
After scoring seven goal and adding six assists as a freshman in 2023, Gingerich ranked fourth on the team with eight goals and eight assists last year while helping West Branch to an 18-1 record and a second consecutive Class 1A state tournament appearance.
Jackson Nichols-Lindsey
Senior, City High
A four-year starter for the Little Hawks, Nichols-Lindsey has been a key in City High’s recent string of success.
Nichols-Lindsey earned honorable mention all-state status from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association last season after helping City High to a 12-4 record and a spot in the Class 4A state quarterfinals.
A first-team Mississippi Valley Conference all-division pick last season as a junior, Nichols-Lindsey appears poised for a huge senior season as he seeks to lead the Little Hawks back to the state tournament.
Liam Teghanemt
Senior, West High
A four-year starter, Teghanemt is coming off the best season of his career last spring when he posted career-highs in points and goals while helping West High to 20 wins and a spot in the Class 4A state semifinals.
Teghanemt was a second-team Mississippi Valley Conference all-Valley Division pick and honorable mention Class 4A all-state selection by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association last spring after scoring six goals and two assists.
Over the past three seasons Teghanemt has scored seven goals and added nine assists and should build on those numbers in a big way this season.
Abdala Ebdala
Senior, Clear Creek Amana
The 2024 WAMAC West Division player of the year, Ebdala is coming off a stellar junior season in which he led the Clippers in goals and points while helping Clear Creek Amana to an 11-5 record.
Two seasons ago Ebdala tied for the team lead in both goals (5) and assists (3) but broke out in a big way last spring leading the Clippers with 15 goals and adding four assists.
Ebdala earned Class 3A honorable mention all-state honors from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association and will be among the best players in Class 3A this season.
Ryan Locke
Junior, Solon
In the first extended action of his career last spring Locke emerged as a consistent offensive threat leading Solon in points and goals while helping the Spartans to a 9-10 record.
Locke led Solon with 11 goals and ranked third on the team with three assists last season on his way to earning second-team all-WAMAC East Division honors.
Look for Locke to be a focus in the Spartan attack this season as the Spartans return two of their top four goal scorers from a year ago.
Conley Sundblad
Senior, Liberty High
Sundblad enters his third season as the starting keeper for the Lightning and has already established himself as one of the top keepers in Class 3A.
A first-team Mississippi Valley Conference all-Mississippi Division selection last season as a junior Sundblad made 48 saves while allowing 23 goals a year ago.
As a sophomore in 2023 Sundblad made 77 saves and allowed just two goals in five postseason matches as Liberty High posted four shutouts on its way to the Class 3A state title.
