Since stepping into the Regina starting lineup as a freshman Morgan Miller has steadily improved each season.
Miller has increased her scoring, rebounding and steal numbers each of the past three seasons while establishing herself as one of the best and most complete players in Class 2A.
Last season was the breakthrough for Miller who earned first-team all-state honors after averaging 19.5 points, 3.9 steals and 3.8 assists per game.
Coming off her stellar junior season Miller maintained her focus on continuing to grow her overall game.
This offseason the area Miller identified for improvement wasn’t shooting or passing and there wasn’t a specific area on the state sheet the senior point guard saw that had to get better.
Instead, she focused largely on her leadership.
“I worked on just being a senior leader and helping the freshman and all the underclassmen because they have so much talent,” Miller said. “That’s the area I felt I needed to focus on the most. I just want to be a big leader on our team.”
As a point guard, a four-year starter and the Regals’ leading scorer the past two seasons Miller has been a natural leader on the court.
In her final prep season she is intent on being a better leader on the court as well as in all areas away from the game as Regina hopes to make a run at a third state tournament appearance in the past four seasons.
“She has taken her leadership to another level,” Regina coach Mary Rogers said. “You can just tell she is setting up our offense more deliberately, she is communicating more. She’s focused on do everything she can in that regard.”
Miller started all 75 games of her career in her first three varsity seasons.
She averaged 10 points, 4.1 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game as a freshman and saw those numbers soar to 17 points, 4 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore.
Last season was the big breakthrough for Miller who led Regina in scoring, assists and steals.
A Truman State signee, Miller picked up where she left off this season.
Miller had 25 points, nine assists, four rebounds and three steals in a season-opening win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
“She is just a kid who loves the ball and that’s why she is playing at the next level,” Rogers said. “She comes into the gym ready to go.”
Miller was 9-of-14 from the floor in the 79-59 win over the Cougars including 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
A career 36 percent shooting from 3-point range, Miller needs five more 3-points for 200 in her career.
The on-court offseason focus for Miller was rounding out her offensive game around her perimeter shooting.
“I’ve been the point guard since my freshman year and I’ve shot a lot of threes so I tried to get stronger and work on my driving game and finishing at the hoop,” Miller said.
The numbers for Miller always stand out but this season Rogers is hoping it is her commitment to leading that has Regina returning to Des Moines in March.
“Her game has steadily developed, she always has the ball in her hands, but I think it is her voice and her leadership that stands out most,” Rogers said. “That and she hates losing.”
