What to Watch on Friday at the Drake Relays

The high school action at the 114th edition of the Drake Relays continues on Friday on and around the famed blue oval inside Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Prep events opened at the Drake Relays on Thursday and conclude on Saturday evening.
Here is a quick look at what to watch with area athletes on the second day of prep action at Drake Stadium on Friday.
Showtime for West High
West High starts its Drake Relays weekend on Friday and the Trojans are set up to start making noise immediately.
The Trojans have four events on Friday that enter with top-four times highlighted by a pair of title contending relays.
West High is seeded second to Ankeny in both the 4×200 and distance medley relays scheduled to run on Friday.
The West High 4×200 foursome of Todd Rent, Julian Manson, Aidan Jacobsen, Izaiah Loveless has run 1:27.42 trailing only the 1:26.12 of Ankeny.
Ankeny has the top time in the distance medley at 3:25.6 but the West High team of Mason Woods, Manson, Jacobsen and Moustafa Tiea is second at 3:32.62.
Loveless and Tiea both have top-four seeds in individual events.
Tiea has the third fastest 800 time this season at 1:54.34 while Loveless has the fourth fastest time in the 100.
West High has plenty more entries on Saturday but will look to get off to a fast start on day two Friday.
Daily Double for Solon’s Federspiel
Gracie Federspiel has been a key piece on back-to-back Class 3A state title teams for Solon.
On Friday the Iowa State recruit will have a pair of chances to show what she can do against the best in the state.
Federspiel will compete in both the 400 and 800 on Friday for the second consecutive year after finishing seventh in the 400 and 11th in the 800 last season.
Federspiel enters with top 13 times in both events.
She has the 10th fastest time in the 400 at 57.74 and has the 13th best 800 time at 2:18.15.
City High Sophomore Haack Makes Drake Debut
Rachel Haack got her first up-close look at Drake Stadium last season when she qualified for the 4A state meet in the discus as a freshman.
Haack returns to Des Moines to make her Drake Relays debut on Friday.
A strong season has Haack a contender in the discus as she enters with the eighth-best throw in the state this season at 138-2.
Abby Veld of AGWSR has the top throw enters with the top throw in the state this spring after posting a toss of 147-3 on Tuesday.
Pleasant Valley senior Reese Goodlet is second at 145-9 in what should be an entertaining competition.
