The annual Your Prep Sports area wrestling team honors some of the top wrestlers in the area for their performance on the mat this season.
Once again some of the best wrestlers in the state competed in the Your Prep Sports area.
The annual Your Prep Sports area teams features a pair of state champions, four state finalists, 11 state medalists and 15 state qualifiers from six different schools.
City High seniors Cale Seaton and Kael Voinovich each earned spots on the all-area team after winning state titles as the State Wrestling meet on February 17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Seaton is the captain of the 2024 Your Prep Sports area team after winning his second consecutive state title.
A South Dakota State recruit, Seaton went 34-1 this season on his way to the Class 3A 132-pound title.
Seaton posted a tech fall, a pin and two decisions outscoring opponents 46-15 in four state tournament matches.
Your Prep Sports Area Wrestling Team
106 – Ethan Humphrey (35-7) Fr., West Branch: Capped a strong debut season that included a River Valley Conference runner-up finish and a district title with a state medal placing eighth at the 1A state meet. Of the seven losses for Humphrey four came against the 1A state finalists.
113 – Alexander Pierce (35-2) Soph., West High: One of the top wrestlers in the state Pierce continued a stellar start to his career with a runner-up finish at the 3A state meet. Already a two-time finalist and a state champion as a freshman Pierce owns a 77-4 career record.
120 – Cale Nash (48-6) Jr., Clear Creek Amana: In his third consecutive state meet appearance Nash secured his first medal going 5-2 on his way to a seventh-place finish in Class 3A.
*132 – Cale Seaton (34-1) Sr., City High: Capped a brilliant career that featured four straight top-three finishes with a second consecutive state title. Seaton outscored opponents 82-26 in eight state-meet matches during his back-to-back title runs.
138 – Kael Kutz (27-5) Sr., City High: A four-time state medalist Kurtz capped an incredible career with another strong season that featured Mississippi Valley Conference and district titles before a fifth-place finish at the 3A state meet.
138 – Jordan Schmidt (48-8) Jr., Solon: Already a three-time state qualifier and two-time medalist Schmidt had his best season to date winning a district title before going 3-2 on his way to a fifth-place finish at the 2A state meet.
144 – Jake Mitchell (30-14) Sr., City High: The more Mitchell wrestled the better he got as the senior went from fifth at the Mississippi Valley Conference meet to a runner-up finish at the district meet before earning his first career state medal with an 4-3 performance on his way to an eighth-place finish at the 3A state meet.
150 – Justin Avila (37-5) Jr., West High: A state medalist two seasons ago as a freshman Avila returned to the state medal stand placing fifth at the 3A state meet to cap a resurgent junior season in which he won Mississippi Valley Conference and district titles before going 4-2 at state.
157 – Kael Voinovich (41-1) Sr., City High: An Iowa commit, Voinovich made the most of his only season at City High, dominating on his way to a state title. Voinovich outscored opponents 44-13 and racked up 19 takedowns on his way to the 3A crown.
165 – Cooper Gates (31-4) Soph., West Branch: A two-time state qualifier, Gates was runner-up at both the RVC and district meets before going 1-2 at the Class 1A state meet.
175 – Kyler Scranton (38-7) Sr., West High: After earning his first career state medal with an eighth-place performance last season Scranton rocketed up the 3A medal stand this season winning five consecutive state-meet consolation matches en route to a fourth-place finish.
190 – Ethan Williams (36-16) Sr., Clear Creek Amana: A leader in the Clear Creek Amana lineup Williams was a large part of one of the most successful seasons in program history finishing runner-up at the WAMAC meet and third at the regional meet before going 0-2 at the 3A state meet.
215 – Vincenzo Lima (32-4), Sr., Liberty High: Among the most decorated wrestlers in program history Lima capped a strong career with his first state medal going 3-2 to place fifth at the 3A state meet. The first Liberty High wrestler with 100 career wins, Lima won Mississippi Valley Conference and district titles before his fifth-place finish at the state meet.
285 – Logan Wright (34-4) Sr., West Branch: An Upper Iowa football recruit Wright capped a stellar prep wrestling career with a second state medal finishing runner-up in Class 1A. Wright won River Valley Conference and district titles before becoming the first West Branch state finalist since 2013.
