IOWA CITY – Another win for City High, another 3-point record for Aubrey Joens.

Two days after setting a single-game City High record with nine 3-pointers in a win over Cedar Rapids Prairie Joens became all-time career 3-point leader in a 63-22 win over Liberty High on Monday at City High.

Joens had a pair of triples on her way to a game-high 20 points on Monday as Class 5A top-ranked City High improved to 18-0.

The two 3-pointers for Joens pushed her career 3-point total to 208, surpassing the 206 threes Mickey Hansche made 206 from 2009 to 2013.

“The single game was really special because it was a big game and it was held by my sister,” Joens said. “This shows what I’ve been able to do over four years and it wouldn’t be possible without my teammates getting me the ball when I’m open so I give a lot of the credit to them.”

Against Cedar Rapids Prairie on Friday Joens made her first seven attempts from beyond the arc and finished 9-of-13 from deep while breaking older sister Courtney’s single-game record of eight 3-pointers.

“Courtney told me if anyone was going to beat it, I wanted it to be you,” Aubrey Joens said. “It felt good because we are so competitive.”

Joens continued her record-breaking spree on Monday.

Already the single-season 3-point record holder after connecting on 66 3-pointers last season, Joens completed the school record trifecta with a triple 20 seconds into the second quarter on Monday.

The two 3-pointers on Monday give Joens 43 on the season and leave her two shy of a fourth straight season with 45 or more 3-pointers.

“It was a goal to have I guess,” Joens said of the career record. “A lot of the credit goes to my teammates who have gotten me the ball.”

Joens led four City High players in double figures on Monday as the Little Hawks shook off some sluggish moments to complete the season sweep of Liberty High (3-15).

City High never trailed on Monday, building a 16-4 lead after the opening quarter.

The Little Hawks opened the second quarter with a 17-0 run that stretched the lead to 33-4.

“There were a lot of mistakes that we made and it wasn’t our best game coming off a game like Prairie but we stuck with it through the missed shots and the mishaps,” City High senior point guard Rose Nkumu said. “We know what it takes and going forward we need to learn from this game and just continue to improve.”

After shooting 48 percent and going 14-of-25 in a 32-point win over sixth-ranked Prairie on Friday City High shot just 35 percent and was 5-of-21 from 3-point range on Monday.

The Little Hawks relied on a defense that held Liberty High to 28 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers to create offense.

“We made a lot of mistakes and had some bad shots and turnovers,” Joens said. “When we played hard and get stops on defense it helped us get some easy baskets.”

Nkumu and Paige Rocca each had 12 points for City High while Kelsey Joens had 11 points and Ella Cook had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Sam McPherson had 10 points and Ava Meyer had nine rebounds for Liberty High.
