MOUNT VERNON – Jace Andregg didn't wait long to make his presence known on the Solon football team.

The senior picked up more than 100 yards from scrimmage in his first game for the Spartans on Friday night, pitching in two touchdowns in a 35-7 Solon victory over Mount Vernon in the season opener.

“It feels pretty good,” Andregg, who previously played at Cedar Rapids Prairie, said. “The excitement was there and my teammates were supportive. The atmosphere was amazing.”

His teammates were just as excited to see what he could do on the field.

“I think he fits in great,” Solon senior quarterback Cam Miller said. “He’s a great person – a better person than he is an athlete. We just need to get him the ball more because he’s such a dangerous athlete.”

The Spartans scored on their first four possessions of the season, led by Miller who accounted for 199 yards and a touchdown through the air and 62 yards and a score on the ground.

Senior running back Seamus Poynton (65 yards, one touchdown) was the first Spartan to find the end zone, capitalizing on a 5-yard run only two minutes into the game.

After forcing a three and out, Solon put together a six-play drive that ended with Miller running in for a 5-yard touchdown.

Andregg got in on the fun on an 11-yard jet sweep near the end of the first quarter to make it 21-0 Solon.

Mount Vernon got their offense moving in the second quarter, but a Michael Broghammer sack promptly ended the drive, forcing a punt that would be downed at the Spartan 1 yard line.

In the ensuing drive, Miller turned to his favorite target, senior wide receiver A.J. Coons, for a pair of big plays.

A 45-yard completion pushed Solon over midfield and five plays later, Miller fell under pressure and threw up a heave toward the end zone.

Coons was right there, snagging the ball for a 21-yard score.

“A.J. and I have thrown multiple times to each other since we were in fifth grade,” Miller said. “I just threw it up and let him run under it.”

After halftime, Andregg showed off more of his speed with a 20-yard rush through the middle of the offense giving the Spartans a 35-0 lead, as Solon was in cruise control.

The shutout came to an end late in the fourth quarter, as Mount Vernon’s Garrett Hormann punched in a score.

“I thought early on we had a nice tempo on offense,” Solon head coach Kevin Miller said. “Cam does a nice job of managing the football and getting the ball to our playmakers. We’ve given him a lot more responsibility.”

Despite the season-opening win, Miller said the team has some things to work on before next week’s matchup with West Liberty.

The Spartans were flagged for multiple personal fouls, racking up 87 yards in penalties on the night.

“I thought thought (the defense) was good,” Miller said. “What I was most disappointed in our football team tonight was our lack of discipline. Those types of things we can’t do. We can’t make those kinds of mistakes.”

Next week's game against West Liberty will be the Solon home opener.
