West High stretched its winning streak to six with a sweep of Cedar Rapids Washington in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday in Iowa City.

Class 4A second-ranked West High scored nine runs in the first inning of an 18-7 five-inning win in the opener over the Warriors and completed the sweep with a 2-0 win in the nightcap.

West High improved to 26-6 on the season and 20-6 in MVC play while Cedar Rapids Washington dropped to 9-20 and 5-17 in conference play.   

The Warriors scored five runs in the first inning of the opener before West High responded with nine runs in the bottom of the inning.

West High following up its first-inning outburst with an eight-run second that featured a grand slam by senior leadoff hitter Nick Biancuzzo and a solo home run from senior Jason Strunk,

Biancuzzo finished 3-for-3 with three runs and six RBI in the opener while Strunk was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Ryan Cooper, Marcus Morgan and Chase Calderwood all had two hits as West High hammered 16 as a team in game one.

Nick Fleckenstein had a hit and drove in two runs while Cooper also had two RBI in the win. Alex Swack picked up the win allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of relief.

Marcus Morgan and Casey Marvin combined on a three-hit shutout in the nightcap while striking out 11.

Morgan struck out five in three hitless innings to open the game before giving way to Marvin who picked up the win, striking gout six and allowing three hits in four innings of relief.

Ben Vander Leest had an RBI double and scored a run while Fleckenstein had a hit and drove in a run for the Trojans.

West Branch Takes Down Treynor

West Branch snapped a 9-9 tie with a 10-run seventh inning on its way to a 19-9 win over Class 2A fourth-ranked Treynor on Friday at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.

The win was the fifth in the last six games for West Branch and improved the Bears to 14-6 on the season while Treynor dropped to 24-6 with its second consecutive loss.

Five different Bears had multi-hit games as West Branch pounded out 16 hits against Cardinal pitching.

Matt Paulsen, Brady Lukavsky and Matt Whaley all had three hits in the win while Pete Espensen and Jaden Hierseman each had two.

Paulsen had a double among his three hits, scored three runs and drove in four while Brady Lukavsky tripled twice and matched Paulsen with four RBI.

Whaley scored three times and drove in three runs and Espensen had three RBI while Hierseman and Tanner Lukavsky each drove in two runs.

Trey Eagle picked up the win for West Branch allowing one run on one hit and striking out six in three innings of relief.  

Paulsen started and allowing eight runs on hit hits while fanning seven.

Clear Creek Amana Splits With Williamsburg

Clear Creek Amana split a WAMAC doubleheader with Williamsburg on Friday in Tiffin winning the opener 11-8 and dropping the nightcap 5-4 in nine innings.

The Clippers moved to 14-17 on the season and 10-14 in WAMAC play while Williamsburg is now 9-23 and 9-17 in conference play.

Brock Reade earned the win in the opener allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out six.

TJ Bollers, Ben Swails, Tyler Schrepfer and Stirlen Roberson all had two hits in the game-one win.

Bollers scored twice and drove in a run while Swails had a double, scored a run and drove in three runs.

Schrepfer had two RBI while Camden Smyka and Sam Young each had a hit and scored two runs.

Young, Smyka and Swails all had two hits in game two while Parker Smith, Casey Ogden and Schrepfer all drove in a run.

Blake Malli was the tough luck loser, allowing just one unearned run on no hits while striking out three in five innings of relief.
