Ryan Cooper capped an 11-run West High rally with a two-run walkoff double as the Trojans completed a sweep of Dubuque Hempstead with a 12-11 win in the nightcap of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Iowa City.

West High won the opener 6-2 and rallied from an 11-1 hole to take the nightcap 12-11 to push its winning streak to five.

Class 4A sixth-ranked West High improved to 12-4 on the season and 8-4 in MVC play with the sweep while Dubuque Hempstead dropped to 6-5 and 4-5 in conference games.

West High won the opener behind a strong start from senior Noah Aanestad who allowed two runs on six hits and struck out eight in a complete game.

Ben Madden gave West High a 4-2 lead with a grand slam in the fifth inning and Aanestad held the Mustangs scoreless over the final two innings.

Marcus Morgan went 2-for-3 with a pair or runs and Owen McAreavy had two hits including a double in the game-one win.

West High trailed 11-1 but got back into the game when McAreavy launched a grand slam in the third inning to cut the lead to 11-5.

The Trojans scored three runs in the fifth to pull to 11-9 and got three runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback.

Marcus Morgan and Jason Strunk each homered in the win while McAreavy, Morgan, Madden and Nick Biancuzzo all had two hits.

Strunk scored three runs and Cooper drove in two in the win.

City High Sweeps Dubuque Senior

City High stretched its winning streak to four with a sweep of Dubuque Senior on Monday in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Mercer Park in Iowa City.

The Little Hawks won the opener 7-1 and completed the sweep with a 10-2 win in the nightcap while improving to 12-3 on the season and 9-3 in MVC play.

Dubuque Senior dropped to 3-11 with the losses and 3-9 in MVC games.

Brady Herzic picked up the win in game on striking out nine while allowing just one unearned run on three hits and in six innings.

Liam McComas went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to pace City High in the opener while Sam Lewers was 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a run.

Ben Steve had a hit and drove in a run while Gable Mitchell doubled and scored twice for the Little Hawks.

Garrett Bormann earned the win for City High in the nightcap allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven in six innings.

Six Little Hawks had two hits as City High hammered out 13 hits in the nightcap.

Zach Juepker went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs and Cade Hanrahan doubled twice, scored twice and drove in a run.

Lewers, Bormann, Reese Hayden and Noah Kabat all had two hits for City High while Kabat drove in a pair of runs.

Liberty High Hammers 11 Extra-base Hits in Sweep of Dubuque Wahlert

Liberty High hammered 11 extra-base hits including seven triples in a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Valley Conference foe Dubuque Wahlert on Monday at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.

The Lightning won the opener 10-4 and took the nightcap 10-3 to improve to 8-6 on the season and 6-4 in MVC play while Dubuque Wahlert dropped to 5-7 and 4-6 in conference contests.

Six different Liberty High players had an extra-base hit as the Lightning pounded 24 total hits in the doubleheader.

Keian Secrist went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs and two RBI to pace Liberty High in the opener.

Alec Boldt, Sam Funke and Nolan Frey all had two hits in the game-one win with Frey, Boldt and TJ Kimm all notching a triple.

Frey earned the win in game one allowing four runs on three hits while striking out eight and walking one in a complete game.

Funke had two triples and went 3-for-4 in game two, scoring three runs and driving in one.

Secrist had two doubles and drove in two runs while Kimm was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Frey went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored while Isaac Bender had a triple and scored twice.

Jacob Norris picked up the win in game two allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out five and walking two in six innings.

Clippers Split With Vinton-Shellsburg

Parker Smith laced a one-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Clear Creek Amana to a 5-4 win in game two of a WAMAC doubleheader with Vinton-Shellsburg on Monday in Tiffin.

The hit by Smith helped Clear Creek Amana split the doubleheader after dropping the opener 9-7.

Clear Creek Amana moved to 6-8 on the season and 4-6 in WAMAC play while Vinton-Shellsburg moved to 5-6 on the season and 3-5 in conference action.

Smith led off the opener with a solo home run on the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning and TJ Bollers hammered a two-run homer three batters later as the Clippers took a 3-0 lead.

Vinton-Shellsburg got a grand slam from Axl Hoepner in the third inning and broke the game opener with three runs in the sixth.

Smith went 3-for-4 with a home run and scored two runs in game one while Bollers homered and drove in three runs.

Camden Smyka went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in two runs in the opener while Sam Young and Grant Jensen each had two hits.

Smith and Young each had two hits in the nightcap with Young driving in two runs.

Smyka had an RBI in the nightcap while Tyler Schrepfer scored twice and had a hit.
