The University of Georgia swimming program got an early Christmas present on Tuesday all the way from Iowa City.
Georgia picked up a verbal commitment from one of the state’s elite swimmers when City High junior standout Heidi Stalkfleet announced her pledge to the Bulldogs with a post on social media.
“I am very excited and proud to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of Georgia,” Stalkfleet wrote on Twitter. “I want to thank my coaches, teammates and family for helping me to reach this point. I can’t wait to be a part of such an accomplished program.”
It took Stalkfleet just one season of high school swimming to establish herself as one of the best in City High history.
Stalkfleet set four school records this fall in her first season of prep swimming, posting a pair of third-place finish at the state meet in Marshalltown.
The junior distance standout set school records in the state prelims in both the 500 freestyle (4:49.86) and 100 butterfly (55.37) and finished third in each of those events.
The 4:49.86 in the 500 freestyle was the fourth fastest time in state history.
Stalkfleet clocked a school-record 51.89 on the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay at the state meet.
She also held top-five times in both the 100 and 200 freestyle this season.
Georgia is one of the premier swimming program in the country capturing seven national titles and adding eight runner-up finishes since 1999.
The Bulldogs last NCAA title came in 2016.
