IOWA CITY – The potential was there for a picture-perfect senior night celebration for the four softball seniors at City High.

After downing cross-town rival West High 5-2 in game one of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader all that was missing was a storybook senior sendoff.

Brooke Bormann provided that fitting finish with some flare in the nightcap.

Bormann putting the finish touches on a senior night sweep for Class 5A third-ranked City High with a two-run, game-ending home run in a 12-1 five-inning victory in the nightcap.

“That senior class, they fly under the radar a little bit and I told Brooke we have to have a senior end this thing,” City High coach Jeff Koenig said. “That’s what I wanted was for one of them to do that tonight.”

Bormann was happy to step up and answer the head coach’s call in the nightcap.

The two-run homer for Bormann was the third of the night for City High (16-2) which stretched its winning streak to 11 with the sweep.

West High dropped to 7-13 on the season with its second straight sweep at the hands of a team ranked in the top three in Class 5A.

“Coach told me when I was on deck, “We need a senior to end this, it’s senior night,’,” Bormann said. “I got in the batters box and I thought to myself it’s going to be down the middle and I’m going to hit a home run. The first pitch was a home run.”
City High knocked some rust off in a 5-2 win in the opener.

Playing for the first time in a week after having MVC doubleheaders postponed or cancelled due to coronavirus concerns on Monday and Wednesday half of the six hits for City High in the opener came from seniors.

“We’ve missed some games with the corona testing and the uncertainty but we had to knock a little rust off that first game,” Bormann said. “It’s hard when you are preparing mentally the whole day for a game and then you have practice. We try to scrimmage at practice and keep it as real as possible.”

One of the biggest hits in the opener came from senior reserve Maggie Glenn who started at second base and came up with an RBI single.

“This year has had a lot of ups and downs and it was really nice to get that recognition that we have been missing from everything else during our senior year,” Glenn said. “Tonight was a lot of fun.”

West High scratched across a run in the first when Eva Burbidge drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Kiahna Hill groundout.

City High regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Ella Cook lined a two-run homer to center.

Glenn added to the lead when she slapped a two-out single to right field to plate Bormann in the second.

“It felt euphoric,” Glenn said of the hit. “It’s frustrating when you are doing well in the facility and you are having a good day and it doesn’t translate to the field but when you can square up a ball and get everything on the field like you want to it’s just amazing.”
Glenn entered with just seven at bats on the season but took advantage of her opportunity on senior night, something that came as no surprise to Koenig or her teammates.

“There is a kid that shows up every day and works her tail off, is in the dugout keeping stats for doing whatever we ask and shows up on senior day and gets a big hit,” Koenig said. She got a start and she wasn’t overwhelmed and that’s what we expect. Whether you are number one on the depth chart or number 15 we expect that if we put you in there you are going in to do the job.”

City High got its offense going early in the nightcap.

Bormann had an RBI single in a three-run first inning as City High took an early lead it would never give up.

The Little Hawks scored in every inning and hammered 16 hits in the nightcap with seven different players collecting a hit.

“We sat all week and we tried to scrimmage but it’s not the same,” Koenig said. “The rust starts to come in when you don’t see live pitching but the second game we light up 16 hits and we looked good.”
Bormann led the offensive outburst going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI.

Fellow senior Sydney Fellows had a pair of doubles and scored three times while senior Kelli Potter had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run.

“I can’t be more happy with these seniors and their play,” Koenig said. “They were ready to play tonight. They know we have a lot of softball left to play and hopefully this thing ends in Fort Dodge but they are taking advantage of every opportunity.”
