IOWA CITY – As Trinity Sadecky began her high school swimming career she didn’t have much interest in swimming the butterfly.

More truthfully, Sadecky didn’t want anything to do with the fly.

“My freshman year I hated it,” Sadecky said. “I didn’t want to do it, I didn’t want to touch it, it was just a struggle for me.”

Two years into her career Sadecky ‘s outlook on the butterfly has changed and the proof is in her production.

Sadecky leads City High in the 100 butterfly and is coming off a win in the event at the Cougar Invite on Saturday in a time of 1:01.36.

“She has improved in everything since her freshman year but most notable this year she has really come on strong in the butterfly,” City High coach Zane Hugo said. “She has made considerable improvement there so that’s been really impressive.”
The success this season for Sadecky is no surprise.

A key member of the City High program for each of the past two seasons Sadecky has the top time on the team in two events and is a key member of several City High relay teams.

“She is a year-round swimmer,” Hugo said. “She is working hard in May and June and she is done with our season and starts club swimming a couple of weeks later so she is definitely working hard all year round.”

Where Sadecky has surprised everyone, including herself is in the butterfly.

She admits she had no interest in swimming the fly as a freshman.

Last season she gave it a try at the urging of Hugo and spent part of her club season working on the stroke.

“I just decided one day that I decided that I might start trying it and in club season I swam it a little more and I started really dropping and I kind of liked,” Sadecky said. ““I feel like this year I am surprising myself with some of these swims. I’m kind of getting good at it.”

Sadecky has clocked a career-best time of 1:01.3 in the 100 fly this season.

She also leads the Little Hawks with a 5:26.71 in the 500 freestyle, a time Sadecky clocked in a win in the event in a dual with cross-town rival West High last Tuesday.

Where Sadecky’s improvement in the butterfly has really shown up is on the Little Hawks school-record holding 200 medley relay team.

Sadecky swam the freestyle on the City High medley team last season anchoring the Little Hawks to a 14th place finish at the state meet.

This season her butterfly performance allowed Hugo to shift the order and the results showed early when the foursome of Sadecky, Carly Weigel, Olivia Masterson and Rika Yahashiri set the school record with a 1:50.83 at the Little Hawk Invite on September 15.

“She anchored our medley relay at state but she swam fly at our Little Hawk Invite and she split faster than we had at the girl at state last year and that was a little surprising,” Hugo said. “I wasn’t expecting her to go quite that fast yet. She is setting herself up for a strong state meet.”

Hugo wasn’t the only person surprised by the school-record time the foursome clocked at the home invite that ranks as the fifth fastest in the state this season.

“I was really surprised we were able to break that record already,” Sadecky said. “Rika came into the wall and I we saw the time and I thought wow we are going 1:50 now what can we do at the end of the season.”
